Several weeks ago, I went away and left my Visor at home. While I was away, the battery ran out, and the memory was erased. I changed the batteries, and synced to my Mac (Pismo powerbook 400) to restore from the automatic backup. Thankfully, almost everything was quickly replaced - with one annoying exception.

Before the wipe, I had a small hack (not sure if it was standalone or via xmaster) which allowed you to assign multiple apps to the hard buttons on the Visor / palm. If any button had more than one program assigned, when you pressed that button, a dialog appeared listing all of the assigned programs and their respective buttons. To clarify: you could assign (for example) Avantgo and Convert-it to the memo button; when you pressed memo, a dialog would appear will Avantgo and Convert-it listed next to the buttons you selected for them; if you pressed those buttons, the respective app would open, or if you pressed memo again, or did nothing, the memo pad was open.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of this program; I did a VT search for generic terms like "button" and "launcher" and nothing similar came up. It was a freeware app. Does anyone here use it, has used it, or remember the name? I would be so greatful....

Well, I searched Handango.com and got 100 results for "button launcher." This one seemed like the closest to what you describe. None of the listed programs were free, though. If that's not it, you might want to search Handango yourself.

You could try QLaunch too. It's a great program. Might be OS 5 only, not sure.
