Hi,

I've been trying to use a new Griffin iMic to record old audio tapes, but I can't seem to get the gain down to reasonable levels: everything comes out distorted.

I've tried OS 10.2 and OS 9.2: same problem both ways. Setting input volume in the prefs seems to have no effect. Ditto for software gain controls in the recording applications.

Any ideas to fix this would be welcome.

Thanks in advance,

-- Nik

you probably have it in "microphone" mode instead of what you want, "line-in" mode. there is a physical switch on the imic between the two jacks: move it toward the microphone logo for "line-in" mode, which significantly reduces the gain.
good luck

Nope, I tried that: doesn't work. Putting it in the lower gain mode helps a bit, but it's still pretty awful

go to the griffin website, or check versiontracker...there is a control panel to control level, and tone for the imic

(havent tried it but saw it posted on their site)

Tried that too: it's better, but still bad.

I am seriously bummed; maybe I just got a bad unit?

try radio shack, for example. there must be something to lower the level before getting in to the mac...

yeah, you probably got a bad one. i'd give griffin tech. a call - my iMic works fine for recording line-level stuff like turntables and tape decks.
