Was wondering ...

I just plugged in my hard drive [firewire enclosure with 3.5" hd] into the firewire port ...

there's a message saying

"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To use the unreadable volumes, click initialize. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore."

This drive contains my Mac OS X setup from my Cube. [contains the OS, and all of my documents/apps]

Questions ::::

Would "initializing" it, format the drive?

Is the hard drive in the enclosure suppose to be set on master?

Is there a way at least for me to get onto the drive to pull out my documents/necessary items?

Thanks for any help!

Hmmm, "Initialize" most likely means format, so please don't choose that option just yet...I would assume that your FireWire HD be set to something *other* than Master if possible, say "Slave".

If it's on Master, your PB may be trying to read it as the master boot drive (as PBs are FireWire HD bootable) and thus it wants to initilize it. I can imagine that if you connect as a slave drive it'll just mount and you can drag as you please, so give that a shot and post whatcha find out...good luck w/ it!

master and slave are only relevant when connecting the drive to an IDE bus.

since this in a firewire enclosure, it should be set to whatever the enclosure manufacturer says in their docs.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Tried with slave & no jumpers, still doesn't work.

It also mentions to run Disk utility.

when I run VERIFY DISK it says ...

Verifying disk "primary".
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file system.log
(It should be 53 instead of 54)
Invalid BSD file type
Invalid extent entry
The volume primary needs to be repaired.
Verify completed.

When I do REPAIR DISK it says ....

Repairing disk "primary".
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file system.log
(It should be 53 instead of 54)
Invalid BSD file type
Invalid extent entry
Repair completed.

Hmm...that right there stumps me. I'm still a bit of a Mac newbie when it comes to real technical issues such as this one, so unfortunately the only thing I can tell ya is that the only time I've encountered those lines you just posted is when the boot sector of my HD was bad and I hadta reformat it to get it to work.

Will the FireWire HD work on any other Macs?

Not a PowerBook-specific problem. Moving to Peripherals.

I think assasyn was asking whether you had tried it on any machine other than the one you're using it on. Obviously any FireWire drive should work on any computer with FireWire.

Also, have you tried any disk utility more substantial than Disk First Aid?

I'm currently going to try TechTool Deluxe, and see if it helps.... I'll report back with my findings.

Obviously Disk Utility isn't helping
