Airport Extreme (802.11g) wont run on an iBook, you'll have to use the slower, 802.11b (11Mb rather than 54Mb)
But you will have a very good range with an Airport card, I do with my iBook 700
we don't have time to stop for gas

If the main goal is just to have wireless internet at home, all anyone ever needs is 802.11b anyway.

Ok thankz guyz but what about the distance and the efficience of this little thing?

Ok my flat is 50 m2 and the antenna will be in its center but what about walls, other magnetic sources, etc...

i love to listen to "Groove Salad" (an iTunes radio) stream in 128kbps... could I still do all this?...

Your cable/DSL connection is probably 1.5 mbps or less, so using normal AirPort is just fine. First you need an AirPort card, which is now $79. Install that in your iBook (very easy to do). Then get a base station, if you want you can get Apple's for $199 (without a modem or antenna, not needed for your use anyway). Just hook it up and it will automatically set mostly everything up for you.

Plan on being able to use your iBook about 250 feet away from the base station, which is pretty far. And yes, you will be able to listen to streaming music from iTunes at 128 kbps quality. That turns into only about 16k/sec, afterall.

I like the AirPort Base Station for wireless, but there are cheaper base stations out there, and many offer better range than Apple's ABS. Linksys, NetGear, and Cisco (really expensive!) are just a few. Anything that is for the 802.11b standard, commonly called WiFi, will work. I use my PowerBook at home over my AirPort network and at Starbuck's with their T-Mobile setup.

I live in a small 2 story house and my ABS provides a clear strong signal throughout the entire house - upstairs (even in the bathroom), downstairs, and in the basement. My deck is right off the livingroom and near the ABS so outside works too. My walls are pretty thin and there is little to interfear with the signal, but in more modern structures things like concrete and steel beams will block or weaken your signal.

An AirPort Extemem Base Station will work fine with any AirPort-equipped Mac. You won't get the extreme speed but you will get the standard AirPort speed, more than enough for almost anybody. Lots of people mistakenly assume AirPort Exteme will speed up their internet speed and this is simply not true. The only benefit of AE is in transferring really large files between 2 Macs both equipped with AirPort Extreme. They could use the 54 mbps throughput of AE, but when you're talking about internet downloads CheesePuff was right on when he said you're capped at 1.5 mbps, and nobody actually gets that. So regular AirPort won't even be pushed to it's limits.
