Anyone done this? I have a LaCie FW external CD-RW with a Teac internal drive. I'm assuming it's just an IDE interface so I should be able to open it up and replace it with any other IDE drive. Is this true? Has anyone ever done this? I want to bump up to a 48x or 52x drive.
Will there be heat problems? The case was probably designed for the 24x burner I have now. Will 48x burners generate more heat or require more cooling?

I took the cdrw out of my APS (la cie) case and swapped it-- with a hard drive. yes, works fine. a cd/cdrw/dvd should be just fine.

The noise of the fan suggests it can do a lot of cooling!
But seriously, they were likely thinking ahead, of faster burners and the possibility of more heat, and the case should be able to handle more.
By the sounds of things, it must be generic hardware in there that doesn't care what's inside. When putting other hard disks in my Maxtor FW case, they are always reported as Maxtor drives. Glad to hear you can put other stuff in there though.
Oh, is it the Oxford 911 bridge in there?

I don't know if it has the 911 bridge, but I seem to recall that it does. What are the ramifications of this? All I remember is that the 911 bridge was the "good one", I don't recall why.
Hopefully you're right on the heat/fan thing. It definitely is a loud fan. I leave it off most of the time.

Here's hoping. I just bought a Sony 52x CD-RW internal IDE. Let's hope I can get it in that case. I also bought a Pioneer 105 DVD burner which I intend to put in the place of the standard combo drive I have in my G4. Let's hope I can get that to work, too.

The one before it, the 910 or 900 (I don't remember) wasn't as fast or something. Everybody was trying to get the 911 because it was faster. Or that's how I remember it.

Do you just unplug it? What's the heat like if you do say, 10 CDs? Or is the fan perhaps there incase you want to leave it running all the time? Did I ask you these same questions in another thread? I remember asking someone this, and about how long the warranty is. I want to take my case apart but I don't want to void the warranty. I'll look for my previous posts and see if I'm repeating myself.
