I found a cheap firewire card I may pop into an upgraded powermac. But it is a brand I have never heard of and XLR8yourmac database came up with nothing. Is this a decent card, it claims to have a Lucent chipset
And what is the internal firewire port for?

The brand really shouldn't matter. I've used generic no-brand Firewire PCI cards (as cheap as $10) in various Macs and PCs for years with no problems what-so-ever. It's the chipset that really matters, and the Lucent one should be fine.
As for the internal port- there are any number of uses, but one of the most common with PCs is using it to connect front-panel PC case Firewire ports. It's annoying (and often unwieldy) to have to run the connections for front-panel ports outside the case to plug into a rear FW port, and the internal port is a Godsend.
Also, I think for some time internal Firewire devices were expected to be common, which hasn't really come to pass.
On your Mac, if you use FW devices a lot, you might find it useful to leave an often used FW cable-type connected and run outside the comp, for quick hookup anytime you need it without taking up the 3 external ports.

Every FireWire card I've tried hasn't supported sleep. If yours allows the Mac to sleep, please, post back.

Sorry, never had that problem myself. I've never bought any 'name brand' PCI Firewire card (IE: Orange Micro or whoever else slaps a label on a box and marks the same hardware up 80%)only generic 'brand' FW cards, haven't had any sleep issues. Macs I've had with added FW cards sleep like babies. I tried a web search for specific Mac/PCI Firewire card sleep problems and couldn't find much of anything.
What model Mac do you have this problem with? What OS? What Firewire version?
I'm guessing a driver issue might be the problem. I've never used any third party drivers (most generic cards don't even come with them for Macs) and haven't needed any.
I'm curious if anyone else has the same problem?
