Now I know that there is no plans for this and that there are new communicating devices coming out, but how cool would it be to have an actual apple cell phone? Wow, just thinking of it makes me wonder. Do you guys think they'll ever do this?

Not very. I mean what can Apple do that my t68i can't? Need more? Get the p800.

All Apple could do is make it white.

Yeah, I know Apple is "working" with these other companies, but I want a genuine Apple phone. Even an Apple service would be cool. I'm not saying that they could do more than the others, but it would be cool to see a lit up logo like the PB's on the back. Just the little things that makes us MacAddicts, so to speak.

Get reception in the US?

Just kidding

I'm getting a new cell in a couple months... I need Bluetooth. I think the T610 is going to be toooo expensive so it's either the T608 or the Siemens S56 (which looks pretty cool). The Nokia 3650 is a little too weird for me and no SyncML...

Problem is Apple is more into money then having a few fans have light up logo's on the back of there phone.

wont be hard to do a GSM phone.. B&O have done it once but failed.. they had a ericson under the cover ( i think ) i had one long time ago and it just felt like an ericson with a fancy face, so if apple does a deal with another compnay they would make somthing neat

According to everything I've read on the Web, poor reception is a legitimate concern with the T68i. That's the main reason why I haven't snapped one up yet. Bluetooh synchronization is great, but useless if the phone doesn't get reception.

All the free phone offers are tempting. But I'd be happy to pay for a better phone that can replace my Palm Pilot at the same time. I really wish the T610 would get here soon(er)!

Not sure if the reception is phone related or not. When I had ATT GSM service each and every phone those idiots gave me wouldnt get reception for squat. I tried Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens. None of them worked to save their lives.

An Apple phone would be cool, but it would have to do a lot of things to be competative in the markedplace. I am a Mac fan, but would not buy a Mac phone for the sake of having an Apple logo. If they could get one that did the functions of an iPod, Phone and PDA I'd seriously consider splurging.

Actually, here in Canada my T68i always has a very high reception even 3 hours north out of the city in the middle of nowhere.

No kidding, TAZ. I'd be all over an iPod-PDA-phone! I'm in the market for all three of these devices, but I only want to buy one device.

I guess it's possible that the poor reception on the T68i is due to crappy GSM tower coverage in the US. I have no idea. I still wish we could already buy the T610. The larger screen could only improve its capabilities for calendar and contact management.

This would make complete sense for Apple, but there has to be something that it can make infinately better than anything else out there. And chances are, they wouldn't just make the phone. My guess is that Apple would push to create a great cell phone service. It would tie into the iLife/iSync/digital hub idea that's been going for sometime. Watch for a purchase of another cell phone corporation, and then get your hopes up.

Nah. A simple joint venture, e.g. with Sony Ericsson, would be just fine. Apple didn't buy the company that makes the iPod's operating system. Apple didn't have to buy Universal to start the iTunes Music Store. They won't have to buy a phone company to make a PDA-phone either.

If an Apple PDA-phone happens, it will be just like with the iPod. Apple will find a good stable phone OS (e.g. Symbian) and an existing hardware platform. Then they'll write some brilliant software for it, clad it in a beautiful Jonathan Ive design, and sell it under the Apple brand. I can't wait for such a device, but I'm not holding my breath.

Finally, Apple is all about integration. So I have no doubt that we would see such a device tied in with iCal, Address Book and iSync, hopefully over the air via .Mac.

Buying a phone company would be idiotic from Apple. Contrary to popular notions, the telecommunications industry is imploding not expanding. Even though everyone and their grandmother has a cell phone now days the profit levels are not what one would expect. For a company, such as Apple, who is already struggling for market share and profits this move could be suicidal. A partnership of some sorts, like Handspring and Cingular/Sprint is much more viable. Also Apple would have to know what is coming down the legislative pipeline. You never know when Congress will decide to screw the wireless services like they did with the wired ones or legislate some standard service format. That could turn into a GIGANTIC drain of resources if say Apple invests into GSM and Congress legislates CDMA or visa versa.

I'd love to see an Apple branded phone, but I think it is not to Apple's benefit to enter a market whose profits are marginal at best and also HIGHLY competative.

Exactamundo, that's what I've been waiting for.
Preferably with Verizon service which has the best coverage I've used. (best near the surf along the shoreline for essential "get your butt out here, it's going off!" communications.
