This post is pretty much hypothetical (until Monday, at least). Basically, does anyone here have any idea of whether the old iPods would be able to support AAC audio files, if it were to be introduced with iTunes 4 and the new iPods? Will a software update add support? Is the old architecture too old and slow to support the new codec?

I'm getting kind of antsy. I'd love to re-rip all my CDs to AAC (well, maybe not LOVE to), but I don't want to have to get a new iPod. My old one works fine.

Any thoughts?

Apple isn't stupid.

They aren't going to release a software based function without a firmware upgrade to the older iPods.

Plus, with iMusic, they wouldn't be able to play on any of the thousands of players already out there.

Your iPod already can decode mp4 with the power that it already has.

I wouldn't stress about it.
