The New York Times is saying that along with the new online music venture Apple is slated to release its "next generation" iPod. I'm surprised this forum isn't all abuzz. Anyway as a long time 5GB iPod owner I'm curious to see what's next. If it's got an FM radio and some recording capability I may have to stick the old one on eBay. And if it's got a battery that actually delivers what they promise, I'm in.

It's like when you're really hungry, and you wait to eat or you can't eat for whatever reason (long drive no rest stops with Burger King), you lose interest and are no longer hungry anymore? Well, it's like that.

I'd say it's possible to hear murmors of upcoming iPod updates, but since the "meeting" is tomorrow, it's highly doubtful you'll see Apple's website updated tomorrow w/ new iPods.

The last thing I want in the new iPods is a radio.

I think new iPods for tomorrow (or maybe one day later since Tuesday seems to be the trend with hardware) is a gimme ... apple's new music service will probably require an update to iTunes as well.

I wouldn't be surprised to see new iPods "bundled" with 25 or 50 free song downloads to help get their service of the ground (and to entice people to open accounts with the new service).

If they actually charge .99 cents per song, the record industry (and Apple) will make a killing . If a standard CD costs between 12.99 and 16.99 at the store, direct downloading of songs for 99 cents (or even if they charged a flat fee of $10 or so for a whole CD) would be a HUGE boost to their profit margin. The cost of design + printing + distribution + "price padding" for CDs that sit on the shelf unsold + reseller margin + overhead of storefront, etc. has got to cost several dollars. Direct downloading cuts all of those expenses out (distribution, reseller margin, and storefront overhead being the most costly). I bet they'd actually pocket more per-album by charging $10 for a download than $15 for one on the shelves.

So they have a press event on Monday but don't say jack about the iPod cuz it is not a Tuesday? Oh man, it hurts reading stuff like this.

The new iPods have already been officially unoffcially announced. Looprumors I think posted a quote from one of Apples VPs in Europe talking about the music service and new iPods for today (past midnight PST here ). This is the same VP who announced iCal and iSync before they were announced.

I've got my money ready, now gimme! LOL

Yikes !!!, my post said :

" I think new iPods for tomorrow" "(or maybe one day later since Tuesday seems to be the trend with hardware)"

I didn't say they won't "say jack about the iPod cuz it is not a Tuesday"

I think they will announce a new iPod WHENEVER its most appropriate. If that's tomorrow when they have the press gathered for the music service announcement .. that's when they'll do it (which I think is most likely possibility). If they wanna give the music service an afternoon of limelight without the distraction of other big announcements, then they might hold off for a day on the iPod. Or more, Who knows ?

Personally, if I had to pick a day ... I think it'll be tomorrow (as noted by the statement "I think new iPods for tomorrow") .

Can you tell I've spent too much time in the semantic purgatory of the Political/War lounge lately

Peace all .. we'll get all the details in a few hours.

I'm geussing MOnday will be the intro day, but not released to public. Let it get some press. Give it an official launch date later in the week. Maybe May 2 since they're planning an Apple Store event supposedly (discounts?)

That's because they're replacing the 5gb model with the ultra thin 5gb flash ipod! JK, have no idea but that would be cool!

They'll probably announce the new iPods, service, etc. today with shipments coming out in the next few months. I can't see how the new service alone would be "music to our ears" if there was no cool new iPod to announce, demonstrate, and purchase with it.

I'm guessing the iPods will be rather expensive (15 and 30 GBs only?) too. Would they start at $399 and $499 (replacing the 10 and 20 GBs)?

DAMN! I can't get any news! MacNN, MacOSRumors, ThinkSecret and MacCentral are all unreachable. I can't believe Apple didn't webcast this damn announcement. This is driving me nuts! I'm used to instant gratification!

I guess I'll just keep polling the damn Apple Store until they update it.
