iPod as an external drive?

I know that iPods can be used as an external firewire drive, but I'm wondering if they can be used for (and are fast enough for) such things as video editing.

I've got a 17" Powerbook, and while a portable music player would be nice, I really wouldn't use it that much. But I do think an external (and fasterd) drive is in my future.

If I could combine the two, it would be an added bonus.

So what's the hard drive speed of the iPod. I couldn't find it under the tech specs on Apple's page.

Would it be suitable/possible to use for video editing via firewire?

oh, good lord, no. the hard drive in the ipod is not particularly well-suited to being used as anything other than an MP3 player.

Isn't it a 4200 RPM drive? That isn't bad at all but not for Video Editing.

AFAIK, the cooling system in the iPod is not designed for constant spinning of the hard drive. This is why although you can boot OS X from an iPod, it's not recommended, as OS X is always using the boot drive as a swap partition by default, and may be constantly accessing the drive at times.

I know that the one time that I used my wife's iPod to copy raw video (not to edit, just copy), it got extremely hot...
