I bought a 10gig iPod in August 2002 right before OSX 10.2 came out, and now the exterior white part of the headphone cable near the jack has a tear in it.. the cables and wires inside aren't cut or anything though. Would Apple give me a new set of headphones if I walked into the same Apple Store where I bought it?

I'm thinking of getting the 30gig iPod and want to sell this current one I have on eBay, but I don't think people would be too interested if it had a messed up, but still 100% functional, headphone cable on it.

Why doesn't Apple have a trade-in thing for iPods?! Or other Apple hardware for that matter... Like trading in a 2002 car for a new 2003 car, just because the chassis changed... *sigh*

I also don't see why they have to combine the headphones and the remote and charge $40 for it. I never use the remote because it makes the cable too long, but I would like another pair of just the white headphones.

Also, I checked out Apple's warranty on the new iPods and it seems to be back to 90 days again.. didn't they change it to a 1 year warranty for the last set of iPods last year? Or did I miss something over the past couple months.

Here's what I found:

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Im...dwarranty.html

Apple warrants replacement products or parts provided under this warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of the replacement or repair for ninety (90) days or for the remaining portion of the original product's warranty, whichever provides longer coverage for you. When a product or part is exchanged, any replacement item becomes your property and the replaced item becomes Apple's property. When a refund is given, your product becomes Apple's property.

No, it's still a year. Reread the link. It's 90 days after the fix an iPod or the remaining time on the warranty, whatever is longer. But now there is unknown fee if the fix is needed in the second half of the warranty period (from 180 days to 365). Never heard of a warranty with a handling fee for part of the covered time.
