I can't find any information on the web about Toshiba 1.8 inch hard drives in 15 and 30 GB capacities. If not Toshiba, whom?

Also, since the new 30GB iPod is thicker than the 15, I can only assume that the 30GB drive is a dual platter product, while the 15 is a single platter drive. This would mirror the old situation with the 10 and 20GB iPods.

Since there were rumors about 40GB iPods, which would probably have also been dual platter drives, I would further speculate that whoever makes the drives has pushed the capacity per platter from 10GB to 15GB, but either couldn't get 20GB per platter, or couldn't do so reliably.

So who do you think makes them?

It is Toshiba I believe. ipoding.com had a link to the Toshiba page:
http://www.ipoding.com/modules.php?o...le&sid=994

Only the 5 gig is listed on there now but it's the same hard drive as the iPod. The 40 gig WAS listed on that page for a time but is now gone.

Here's Toshiba's product page that lists 5, 10, and 20 GB drives. Perhaps the 15 and 30GB models are exclusive to Apple for a time.

Well when they get out in quantity someone will crack the case open and solve this once and for all.
