This just happened to me and I am concerned..
I am sitting here checking out MacNN forums when my screen goes BLACK and I hear a click from behind the moniter. I click the mouse in a panic, thinking maybe it went to sleep, it came back up but the screen was shaking and it came back up from dim to light. Now I think the screen looks a bit dimmer from before.
What did I do?
It's a NEC MultiSync 22".

It sounds like your screen degaussed itself, but it's impossible for me to tell from your description. That sounds most likely, and if it is the case, the screen looking dimmer is probably psychological.

Yeah, it doesn't look dim, now. Just me being paranoid. But I didn't like the whole turn black-shakey wakey-pop ordeal.

What is degauss? Is it terminal?

Deguassing only deals with the monitor itself. The process clears up your monitor. It should be clearer now, if that's actually what happened.

Here's a much better explanation than mine.

Agreed. If you don't degauss your monitor once in awhile, alot of monitors will have an automatic "timer" that will do it itself.

Although it's been five years since I've owned a CRT, it sounds like it's going through it's degaussing process.
