Hello. I need to buy an internal CD-RW drive for my mac (the 8X stock one is a little outdated). If you are having success burning with iTunes 4 will you provide the brand and model # of the drive?
I've looked extensively but I cannot find a straight answer from apple.com, I find mostly external CD-RW drives, or Superdrives.
If it helps, I've a PowerMac G4 533MHz DP, Digital Audio series.
A thousand thanks to anyone with help.

they have a drive list here. I use a Lite-on 52X24X52 burner in my MDD along with a super drive. the lite-on is fully supported by the finder and itunes. i think it was under 50 dollars.

Hi, I purchased and installed this drive. It will not burn with iTunes 4, it stops in the beginning & says an error has occured. I've tried adjusting the burn speed but this doesn't help. If I try to burn through the finder it causes a kernal panic.
Was there some software you installed to make it work, or do you think it's my model of Powermac? I have the Digital Audio 533MHz Dual Processor. The CD-RW is the only optical drive installed and it is set as "master".
thanks for any help.

Are you sure its the right drive? I just tried burning a cd with itunes 4 and it worked fine. No errors. are you sure its a LTR-52246S? what brand does it say in the ASP?
Reading some recent reports at xl8yourmac.com, other people ARE NOT having any problems with this drive.
Running on a MDD, 10.2.6, LTR-52246S- Revision 6S0C.

Yeah I got the exact one from that website the "Lite-on 52X24X52". One thing I've noticed was that the website says nothing about the drive being compatible with Mac OS. The box the drive came in also does not say anything about Mac, only Windows.
I assumed that the drivers were just included in OS X and that's why they did not come with the drive.
If I have the incorrect one, would you mind providing more info about where you got yours? I went directly through that the link provided above.

search here for IDE drives and mac os X, and the manufacturer as lite on . The drivers for this drive came with 10.2.3 i believe. I ordered mine from googlegear.com and you are right, it doesn't mention anything about being compatible for the mac but i bought it because other people posted that the drive worked in 10.2.3.
"Adds disc burning drivers for additional third-party burners, including: LaCie d2 CD-RW 48x12x48x FireWire, LaCie d2 CD-RW FireWire 52x24x52, and BUSLINK RW5252FM 52x24x52x"
i believe that the the Buslink uses the Lite-on drive.
does your ASP look like this?(the disk size will be different).
I think i just figured your problem out, did you say that you were getting errors trying to burn in itunes? unexpected error? try changing the time between the songs to 2 seconds.

Quotes from that site:
So far, the drive works very well. Boots from 9.1 disk, 9.2 upgrade disk, 10.2.3 disk. Drive is recognized by OS X and I-tunes. Performs well on the tests I have done. Burned CD-R's from I-tunes, and from the OS, also a CD-RW burned and erased.
This thing is wicked fast. I'm very pleased.
This is a great site, thanks.
Recently upgraded my older LiteOn CD-RW drive to this new one. Everything works perfectly. This drive boots my Jaguar CD and it recognised under iTunes and Toast 5.2.1 - running OS 10.2. I have not tested under OS 9 as it's not installed on my MDD 1 Gig machine. The drive will not boot the Hardware Test CD either with holding down the C key or by selecting it as startup item. I could only boot from this Cd via the internal DVD-R drive. The firmware version of this drive as per the Apple System Profiler is 6S0D.
Installed easily but of course, I had to remove the front bezel - just like the previous LiteOn drive. I only upgraded for the 24X CD-RW burning. Can't fault this drive and for only $90.00 AUS, pretty awesome.
Mark.
Had a previous Lite-On 48x drive that died yesterday. Went out and pruchased a Lite-On 52x24x52x. Installation took less than 10 minutes.
Copied an CD using Toast Ti 5.2. Smooth.
Tried iTunes and, Bam! unexpected error.
Turned my browser to xlr8yourmac, and found out the real deal.
Yep, I could only burn a CD in iTunes with the gap set to 2 seconds.
What gives? Apple listen up! Don't limit the burn speed! 24x is like using a 28.8 modem, Remember those things? Add CD Text. Come on it's subcode info! Add some mastering features. Give iTunes all the audio features of Toast Ti. Trust me you won't go wrong. Other than that my machine rocks!!!
-------
do you have the latest os x updates?

I have 10.2.5 at this time. I did have iTunes gap set at "0", I will adjust that... but I am still puzzled why my machine had a kernal panic when I tried to burn from Finder (I tried once: kernal panic, restarted & did "fsck -y" & tried again: another panic).
The only hardware I have added to my machine is the Midiman Audiophile 24/96 sound card... maybe I will troubleshoot by removing that & trying again.
thank you again for all your help, you're very cool. I'm going to try out a few things, I'm sure I'll figure it out.
