I just received my new iPod 15G and am quite pleased with it. One question arising though...

Is there such a thing as a "Recently Played" -type playlist that could be generated ON the iPod for the songs one has just been playing on the iPod?

I know about the On-the-Go list, but that apparently clears when you re-connect the iPod to the Mac. I'm hoping for something a bit more permanent, so as to use the iPod somewhat to listen to and pick amongst new songs.

Thanks!

Yes, that is exactly what I would like to do. I was hoping the on the go playlist would be persistent, so that you could tag new songs that yo like while listening on the road.

But you say the on-the-go playlist is cleared everytime you connect? That doesn't make much sense.

i had a smartplaylist in iTunes which was the last 10 songs i had listened to. this synced to the ipod just fine.

try hookup your ipod and then create the smartplaylist in itunes and then when it is empty move it over to the ipod.

and won't the ipod keep updating the smartplaylist itself?

or am i missing your question completely?

Doesn't that depend on if you are manually or automatically updating your iPod?

But the real question is, can you make a playlist on the iPod and then recover that playlist when you connect back to your library?

Using a smart playlist that shows the most recently played songs like you suggest is a good idea. It doesn't actually have to reside on the iPod. Make it in iTunes. Then everytime you sync (assuming manual sync) you will see all the recent songs you listened to on the pod. This is not quite the same thing as hearing a great new song on the pod and flagging it so you remember it later.

Thanks riverfreak and mdc.

My understanding of On-the-Go is that it is not persistent. I think that the little memo that appears the first time you use OTG menu gives that warning. I haven't had too much time to play with the iPod yet, so I don't know this for sure.

I also don't know whether the "Recently Played" list from iTunes updates on the iPod if you are using automatic sync -- I'm on an old Lombard with only a 4G drive, so I am trying to figure out the best way to set up my sync, and right now it is manual.

mdc-- my experience so far is that the iPod does NOT update a smart playlist as you go through playing songs. That sucks, if true! But I may be doing something wrong? Isn't Recently Played itself a smart playist?

riverfreak-- does your idea work? Will iTunes update the Recently Played it maintains, when you sync the iPod? Probably only if you autosync, eh?

i just tested this out. i created a smartplaylist in itunes for the last 10 songs played. the playlist automatically listed the last 10 i have played in itunes. i synced my ipod. looked on the ipod and the new playlist was there and the tracks were the same as in itunes.
i played a song on the ipod, scrolled through the song to the end and let the song finish. looked at the playlist and the song that had just finished playing was at the bottom of the list.
synced the ipod and looked at the playlist in iTunes and the son that was played on the iPod is in the Itunes playlist.

That is a nice feature, huh? Lets you track your listening preferences over time, even on the go. That's rad.
