Does it vibrate? Does it beep? Do you have to be wearing headphones to hear the alarm?

No, you don't have to have the headphones on to hear the beep. The iPod has a speaker, and the beep is quite loud. It beeps about 8 times really quickly, then stops. Don't know how well this will work for those of us who sleep heavily. Wish it had a snooze function too . . .
You can also set it to start playing music, but you need the headphones on to hear the music.
Unfortunately, as with most Apple products, the written documentation on this feature is very poor. The manual just says "To set alarm, go to Clock > Alarm." No description or discussion at all.

Excellent, as i have mine connected to the stereo at night. Now i'll both get to sleep with it AND wake up!

Does the alarm actually play through the headphones?

The alarm is cool, quite loud, but it only beeps a few times and then stops. This severly handicaps it for all but the lightest sleepers. It would make the perfect travel alarm - only if it beeped indefinitely until a button was pressed. I submitted the suggestion to apple, so maybe it will be added if enough others do.
Great start, though.

If you have the alarm set to play music, then yes, it plays through the headphones. If you have it set to beep, then no, it doesn't.

Yes, I totally agree. I was talking about this in another forum. Where did you submit this request to?
It looks like this could be easily done with a software update for the ipod. I really want this alarm to beep until a button is pressed.

Its odd that you say it is quite loud. Do you have to have headphones on? I have not been able to hear any beep at all. Should it be turned off, or put in sleep mode before the alarm sounds?

Make sure the alarm says its on. I missed this the first time I set the alarm time.
To answer your question. No, you don't have to have the headphones on to hear the beep that the alarm makes.
Unit does not need to be in sleep mode. I am not sure what would happen if the unit is turned off. I haven't tried that yet.

I have found that if I turn on the alarm and then set the time, it doesn't beep. But if I set the time first, and then turn on the alarm, it works. Turn the alarm off, then on again, if necessary.

The on then off trick seemed to work. You are all right about how short is it. Who could wake up after such a short little beep?

This one of the beauties of the Line Out jack on the dock. I set the alarm to play Slayers - Reign In Blood, and it just booms through the stereo. Now THAT will wake you up. It certainly did today.
