Apple doesn't refer to these new iPods as 2nd or 3rd generation so the interpretation is left to us. I can see how some would consider the new iPods to be second generation. Because the 10 and 20GB iPods were of the same basic design as the original 5 (except for the touchpad scrollwheel) they could be considered to have been larger capacity 1st gen iPods.

Apple *does* call the new 10, 15 and 30 GB models as the Third Generation. Watch the little keynote thingie.

Phone?
Or maybe this will be a huge hit with those who are currently sneaking DAT recorders into live shows. Go see a concert and 10 minutes later you're streaming it to all of your buddies through iTunes.
Or maybe its a precursor to when you will be able to slap a camera attachment on the new dock port and have a killer videocamera.
