The iPods have an actual harddrive in them, correct? That means moving parts.

How well will an iPod withstand jogging or mountain biking? Seems like a solid state MP3 player might be better.

Anyone have experience with this?

As others have pointed out, the iPods are solid. They also don't skip. Perfect for running. You'd want to come up with some way of securing it for mountain biking, of course.

If only it was waterproof, now that would rock.

While I have read of joggers having issues with the 10GB & 20GB versions (pausing erratically), my 5GB iPod is perfectly solid while jogging.

I know this sounds silly, but what about inside a tractor? My dad has a farm and it would be great for him to be able to use when he's working. Of course the next problem would be finding headphones that cancelled out enough of the surrounding noise.

Should work just fine. I would definately use carrying case or cover of some kind to keep it from getting to dirty out there. And noise canceling headphones are available... though the good ones are pretty expensive.

Don't get noise-cancelling headphones... they pretty much suck and won't close out as much background noise as closed headphones. Go to http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=2 to read about the different types.

I'm not worried about skipping. I'm worried about the heads damaging the platters. Hard drives are delicate machines that are generally not meant for abuse.

The drive spins up long enough to dump 20 minutes of music into memory, then spins down.

Mine's falling appart...

I've dropped it twice, one time without a case...

I've estimated my iPod will be junk by the end of this year...

I've had it for around 6 months now...

The wheel is breaking down (its the one that actually turns), and the headphone port plastic where the remote normall hooks to is breaking... I'm keeping the remote in place on it now to help prevent it from breaking any further...
