Ordered a 30 GB on April 29 (or "April 28" in the order because the Apple Store is US based) and received a shipment notification this afternoon. Previous shipment notifications from my Apple Store orders suggest it will probably arrive tomorrow (Thursday, May 8).
Woohoo! Apple really meant international orders would ship by May 9. Just in time too, I gave my 1st gen iPod to a relative and these last few iPod-less days have been just too quiet...
Anyone else here in Oz getting/got an iPod in the next day or so? Are they in the stores yet?

Update: guess I'll leave this and make a new post

It's here! Thursday, May 8, 1:30 pm.
Well done Apple Store Australia.
Update: Obligatory pics follow...
I guess the strelitzias (birds of paradise - the orange things) outside the window prove that this isn't the US.
Here is my ipodlounge.com type shot - Sydney in the distance from the carpark at Westfield Hurstville.

Although its not through the apple web site, I ordered my 900mhz iBook on the 28th April, and they have been ridiculously slow. They said the absolute latest they would have it by was monday the 5th of april, its now thursday (8th) and apparently my iBook just got shipped today.
The annoying thing is I had been phoning them everyday to check whether it has come in and each time they said "hold on i'll check the apple database and call you back", and every single time, i had no return call.
On tuesday i called them at 1pm asking where it was, they said they would call back, i waited, then called then at 2pm they said the exact same thing, i waited, i called at 3pm and he confessed he hadn't even checked yet, i waited for another hour then called again, and after that time, i was called back.
BUT the most annoying thing was that they called me the friday after i ordered it and they said it was it, so i drove all the way to the shop which is a good 45mins, and when i got there they said sorry we dont actually have it.
So now i e-mailed a guy who i had been messaging before about iBooks who works there and hes looking into it ASAP (apparently but i trust this guy)
I just hope i get my iBook soon.

It's funny, even though I and my relatives live in Sydney where they are like 15 Apple Resellers within a 30 km radius, we've been ordering more and more through the online Apple Store.
It's about a 50/50 split at the moment.
Your story reminds me why...
Maybe you weren't wearing a suit. (Subtle dig at the snooty mob at AppleCentre Next Byte Sydney.)
A story like yours, only the shop had much more reason to call - my father was in the market for a Ti-Book. Went in to AC Sydney. Sorry, not available to show, getting some more in soon. That's okay, call me when they are, here's my phone and email. Will do.
He never, ever heard a thing from them again. We're talking a $5,500 product. You'd think they'd make an effort. Probably thought, "the old coot couldn't afford a PB G4!"
Anyway, he waited 2 weeks, then following my suggestion, walked into AppleCentre Hurstville and bought one from a customer's canceled order.
He's had furniture sellers breaking their necks to get him a $20 cushion. Ever thought of employing salespeople, Next Byte?

I hate the apple center on broadway, they over charge for a lot of things and most of the staff i found to be really rude, they also hardly have anything on display.

AppleCentre Adelaide CBD (Next Byte) got all 3 models in on Friday, but all the 30GB ones went out to customers that had pre-orders. We currently have the 10GB and 15GB models in stock.
We (and probably other stores as well) still have a Gen 2 iPod on display simply because the stand/case that we have to secure it wont accommodate the new iPod. But we are able to show customers a new one if they let us know they are interested in an iPod, and I assume once we have a way to secure a new iPod there will be one going out into the showroom.

Any more Aussie 3rd Gen 'podders round here? Reports of sightings?
I think this model should suit Australian conditions much better. With the solid-state buttons there are far fewer openings on the surface to get stuff trapped. I was often getting a grain of sand under one of the buttons on the Gen 1 which stopped it pressing properly, or making the wheel grind.
(And now with the deluge of rain in Sydney at the moment, I get to find out if it's waterproof! Man, this is too much water.)

Agree to everything you said.
A few years back I went there to check out the iBooks. And all they had was an iMac on display.
They told me they don't have anything on display becuase they sell their display stocks as they don't order in enough stock.
They are a bunch of bludging wankers.

Hey Mark,
how much are you cats selling the 15GB for on student discount? (assuming the iPod is available at student prices...)
Not that I can afford one right now, but if I can scrounge up some more freelance work by years end I might have to buy myself a little present
