And I don't think it should've.

After the last software upgrade, my 2Gen 10 gig iPod has gained a "new" menu. On the topmost level, the normal menus are there - Playlist, Extras, Browse, Settings - all with a hierarchal ">" next to them, plus a new entry: "Backlight" with no ">". Nothing happens when I select this item.

Now, Backlight is usually (and still) found under the "Settings" menu. I have rebooted the sucker by holding down the play/pause and menu buttons, and I have let it play until the battery was drained all the way, but the menu is still there. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix the thing which don't involve removing the 4.5 gigs of music on there?

This is normal, it's part of the Software Update. It toggles the backlight if the timer is set to OFF.
