I bought my brother one of the new iPods, and only after shipping it to him did I recall that I believe he has the USB only version of the iBook.
Is there any way to get this setup to work for him? A USB->FireWire port or something?

Well...maybe. It would go as follows: the new iPods are USB 2.0 compatible out of the box. However, in order to actually interface via USB 2.0, you have to buy a separate cable from Apple (if I'm not mistaken). Now obviously, your brother wouldn't have USB 2.0 either, but this standard is backward-compatible. So, it might work with his regular USB port, albeit at USB 1.0 speeds.
That being said, it ain't gonna be any fun for him, 'cause USB 1.0 is slow as molasses in comparison with both Firewire and USB 2.0. It's gonna take an entire day to fill up a 10 gig iPod. If I were you, I'd take it back to the store...

By the way, if you want to sell it rather than take it back (which I don't really encourage you to do, but it's your call), PM or mail me at

Yeah I'm not sure if iTunes will work with it over USB properly though. Is there such thing as a USB->FireWire connector? I realize it'll be dog slow, but at least it lets him use it.

Well, it shoudn't matter whether you get a Firewire--->USB 2.0 or a Firewire--->USB 1.0 converter. You're better off just buying the cable from apple though. I'm not sure if that'll work (i.e. if iTunes will recognize the iPod through USB 1.0), I guess the only way of telling is to try...

moki,
Hopefully these links will help you out:
iBook 366mhz
iBook 466mhz
To directly answer your question, both models debuted on September 13th, 2000 and were discontinued on May 1st 2001, when the new form factor iBook (dual usb) was released.
Hope this helps!

When the iBook is just 1 year old it absolutely has FireWire.

Right, so if it was a new iBook a year ago you're all set, or if it was after September 2000. I think I bought my 466iBook in October of that year. I really would not bother with USB, one it would be slow as hell, two you're not even sure if it will work. I wonder how much you could get a firewire Mac for, used of course. Anyways sounds like you might be all set, let us know.
