I have an version 10Gb ipod bought in August last year. Over the last few weeks it has been running out of power VERY quickly and not operating well. I have re-calibrated the battery and tried to make it last longer, and thought I had the problem licked. That was, however until last weekend when I went to Italy. I used it for half an hour on the way to the airport - fully charged. Then flew for 2 hours, and on landing got it out and it wouldn't work - no low battery or anything even when I tried to reset it. Help! I really need it to keep me sane!
If it is knackered what should I do? I bought it from Apple online store in the UK, so I'm assuming I return it to them. Anyone with experience?

Sounds like you've got an official battery problem; Apple's quite familiar with this issue, so if it's recently purchased, Apple UK should easily take it back and either repair it or replace it. If your battery isn't lasting 3 hours on a full charge, that's a dead giveaway the battery's faulty, and telling an Apple employee that should be enough to warrent a return. Good luck!

Cheers, will do when I get home.
What are the chances of me getting a new version ipod? Anyone know if they've run out of stock of the old ones - they're not being sold anymore are they?

Well I'd assume Apple will either replace the battery on your current iPod or attempt to replace it with a refurb. 2nd gen. 10gig iPod. I would assume that they still have some 10gig refurbs somewhere in their warehouses, as it's simply not been long enough since the release of the 3rd gen. iPods to have them entirely cleared out by now, but then again, there's always hope.

Have organised for it to be picked up. Almost called Apple support until I saw the fee £35! Bugger, not that it would have helped of course!

Sounds good. And just for future reference, there is a huge fee to call Apple Support, EXCEPT, if you're ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that you're call will end with them arranging for your Apple product to be picked up due to a defect/problem (such as your faulty battery) then the fee will NOT be charged to you. The fee is ONLY waived if the call ends with an agreement that a product is faulty, otherwise, they'll charge you.
And BTW, I'm sure your battery is fault...tonight I listened to my iPod continuously for 1.5 hours with NO (zero) bars lit up in the battery status. If my 2nd gen. 10gig iPod can play for 1.5 hours with NO bars lit, yours is certainly faulty...hopefully they'll replace it quickly.
