Hi,

I would like to buy a new 15gb Ipod, and wondered, what is the bitrate at which it records through the "line in" in the dock?

Regards

It's a line out, not a line in.

There is a line in, somewhere on the dock I believe.

Just have a look at www.ipoding.com

That is still speculation of sorts. Something they (Ipoding.com) hacked in to find, not supported or even acknowledged by Apple.

Well who cares? I mean if it works then it works. Has anyone who has a new Ipod care to try it out?

Seeing that you can only record 6 seconds at a time, would it even be worth the effort?

Well ipodding didnt really hack in. You go into diagnostic mode (which is simply pressing certain button combinations) and you have 2 options in terms of recording. LIN REC and RECORD. RECORD uses the headphone jack to record a 6 second test *being thats it a diagnostic mode*. It's only mono, and probably when implemented will be for recording lectures, interviews - basically stuff that doesnt require stero recording. Thats not to say that it doesnt support stereo recording through the headphone jack. LIN REC is used to test the recording through the line out jack on the dock. I havent been able to test this one myself yet, but its the only other jack on the whole unit so I think that LIN REC has to use that port. It would make sense that this port records stereo because if you are in a situation where you need stero recording, you probably have access to power (and may need it - I'm sure recording will suck up the juice).

As for what bitrate - people have *speculated* that the internal parts of the iPod are overly powerful for what it does and that it could probably record and compress to MP3 or M4A on the fly. Of course to make it seem like Apple does more work they may release recording as uncompressed first (aiff) and then add compression support in later.

But with this new cable connection on the bottom - anything is possible.... and its still all speculation since there is no documentation on this, but there is no denying it exists.

In the diagnostic mode I believe so. But you cant save these files either. So its kinda useless as it is, pretend its not there.

It's not supported, yet. It probably will be in a later release, if you're lucky when they add the Windows USB support, but maybe later. Until then, no one knows what it will do, but except for a little screwing around it's worthless.
