I bought an iPod, the new 30GB one. Generally seems to work nicely enough, syncs with iTunes, plays mp3, aac, Audible.com files, etc.

One thing strikes me as odd: when I turn it off (press & hold Pause/Play), usually the only way to power it on again is to use the Reset procedure (press & hold Menu and Pause Play); just pressing "any button" usually doesn't do it.

Isn't that wrong? The booklet seems to say Reset is only used for troubleshooting, but I'm doing it several times a day. (It doesn't seem to bother the iPod, but if it's malfunctioning I'd rather get the store to replace it now, before I discover what else is wrong after the easy exchange expires. And sometimes it does come on when I press any button, which seems inconsistent.) It's fully charged.

Thanks for your wisdom.

Yeah you might want to take it in. No matter how I turn mine off (by holding the play/pause button or letting it shut itself down), just hitting the selection key (in the middle of the scroll wheel) will turn it on.

I'm not sure it's necessary to actually turn the ipod off -- I always just put on on hold and let it turn off automatically. That way it keeps my place and and also doesn't reset the random play as well.

Many people are reporting this with the 30 Gig drive. Wait for a firmware update and if it is still busted take it in.

God only knows how Apple missed this in the first place (along with the 20 other iPod v3 bugs)

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

The iPod holds its place even when you manually turn it off. You can turn it off at the middle of a song. And when you turn it back on, it will resume.

I just tried it on my 5GB and it lost my place. Is this only with the new models?

Feature of OS 2.0. Can't think why it wasn't in 1.0, very handy when you're halfway through a talking book (or extracted DVD commentary - one of my favorite uses for the iPod).

Regretably, remembering its place in an audio track is one of the things that's lost when the iPod is hard reset (instead of merely turned off). Which makes my need for a reset instead of a power-on distracting when I'm listening to an Audible book I can't finish in one commute.

Found this AppleCare KBase article . Apparently hard resets are now "normal" for the new "Dock connector" iPods.

Very short KBase-article. And it doesn't want to be added to "My Supports"
