Considering whether I should get the extended warranty from BB for my 3G iPod. Its ~$40, so less than 10% of cost... I think it goes either 2 or 4 years (cannot remember).
While I normally think these things are a waste of time/money, I'm thinking that if I want to jog, etc with the iPod, given the reports of problems, maybe this would be worth it for after the Apple 1 yr warranty.
It seems to cover failures, but not out-and-out breakage by the owner (like cell phone insurance does)
Thoughts,
Mike

I've heard pretty good things about CompUSA's TAP warranty, and apparently you don't have to have bought the iPod there to buy the warranty. Some people have been successful in getting "upgraded" to a higher model because their current iPod broke under the warranty and was no longer in production.

Best Buy's coverage on their iPod's was the only reason I bought my iPod from them. It's $40 for 4 years coverage and they do not service the iPods, so if something is wrong with yours, you'll get a new one. Also, if it dies, and they no longer make your iPod, you will get upgraded to a newer model.

I didn't purchase the warranty, because I wonder (doubt) whether they will carry iPods in a year. They don't seem to maintain the replationship with Apple for long periods at a time.

how much does this cover? there's no info on their site other than to add it to the cart. $60 might be a good deal, depending on the amount of protection it gives (I'd get the Best Buy plan, but i bought my iPod through the dell deal the other day)

It saved my friend's dead 10 gigger. He just brought the unit itself in, and they gave him a new one, no questions asked. If there's one thing I say about them, they're very generous with refunds and returns.

It basically covers everything except intentional, accidental damage. But say if you drop it on a carpet and it stops working and there is no visible damage, you can get it replaced. About not carrying iPod's in a year, if it dies and they don't carry your product, you will at least get your money back, which is just as good.

Peter-
They are still under legal obligation to honor the warranty.

I just ordered a 20GB from MacWarehouse (under $300!). I know it's an older model, but it should be fine for what I need!
Is there some way to buy an extended warranty on a recently purchased iPod?

Check your credit card coverage if you used a credit card to buy it. I know my VISA doubles the warranty of anything I buy upto 1 extra year. But you have to send in copies of your receipts and warranty terms so they have it on file. I think thats your only bet. Other things to look at are listing it under your house insurance, you might have some sort of protection/help there.

dettociao,
You are correct. What am I thinking? Anyway I always steer away from extended warranties. The few I have bought, I never used. Apple releases new products so often, I'm sure I will replace it with whatever comes out next.

If you read the other threads above, someone mentioned that they thought CompUSA sells extended warranties even for those iPods not sold by them. At least worth a phone call, eh?
I too have read this before in this forum, some guy broke it, then bought the warranty, slick.

Thanks. I too have read that CompUSA might offer warranties for stuff bought at other places. I'll look into it!
