Is there such a thing as a Firewire coupler/extender?

Hi all,
In waiting (and waiting and waiting and waiting) for the Apple Store to ship their iPod 3G cables, I wanted to know if there are any B&M stores that sell Firewire extenders and/or couplers. My 1G iPod used a standard Firewire cable. Since I have one dock, and I use the iPod and work and at home, I have to take my dock with me all the time. It wouldn't be that much of a hassle except that at work I have to reach behind my PC which is on the floor to hook up the dock, and then the same to disconnect it. I'd like to connect it to the Firewire cable that's there now instead. Any way to do this? Thanks.
Mike

Ah. Thanks. $39 is kinda pricey though. The iPod 3G cable alone is $19. I can't see why a simple extender is $39.

Are you looking for an extender or a firewire cable with a female connection at one end?
An extender actually boosts the signal so that you can extend the firewire cable beyond it standard limit.
A firewire cable with a female connection is used to connect a short firewire cable and make it longer without going over the limit.
From your description I think you need a firewire cable with a female end. You'll be able to find that at almost any online computer store.

Actually, I went to CompUSA, Circuit City, and Best Buy and none of them had one. That's why I figured I'd turn to the net. Yes, you're right - I just want to plug my dock into a cable without having to go behind the computer every time.
The thing is, you say "a female connector". It seems like different sites define "female" differently. Think about it - the outer casing could be considered the "male" end, but the inner section of the cable could be considered "female". I found that different web sites that say one have a picture of the other.

Well, normally, male/female is pretty unambiguous. Any cable that plugs into something is called male, and any connector in which something is plugged is called female.
With that out of the way, you would indeed need a male--->female firewire cable for your needs, but I've never seen one in a brick-and-mortar store. Alternatively, you could check out the following site:
http://www.bonuscable.com/default.php?cPath=381
Check out the last adapter: it's a female/female one. So you' d get an ordinary male/male cable, plug that in at one end of the adapter and plug your iPod cable in at the other end. Best of all, it's only $3.50!

The extenders came in. When I hook up the iPod2 Dock to the existing Firewire cable using the extender all the iPod does is charge - no data connection at all. Hooking it in directly works.
Is this a flaw in the extender, or could it be because of the length of the two cable lengths?
