I am really tempted to get one of the new iPods.... but ehre is my dilemma....
In reality, I don't have 30gb of mp3s... possible never will need that much space... A 15GB iPod would probably suit my needs very nicely... however... if the price difference is ONLY $100.... why not spring the extra cash for twice as much data hold? I'm short on the cash flow, so I may wait till the next price drop (whenever that is)... but the issue will still be there. Any recommendations? I would definately opt for the 15gb, over the 10gb, so the choice is really between the $400 15gb, and the $500 30gb...
Any recommendations...? Keep in mind I am not much of an audiophile, and don't keep loads of mp3s on hand... at this point, I have 6.27 gb in my iTunes library...
Thanks!

The 15 is thinner. The extra 15 would make a pretty good portable disk drive however...

Well, first of all the 10Gb really isn't that great a deal, considering it doesn't come with ay of the accessories like the dock, remote and case. If you hurry you can get the 30GB for about the same price as the 15 from Dell (see the post in this forum). Failing that, I would probably still recommend the 30GB. You would be surprised how fast you can accumulate music (especially when you get used to using the iPod) and you can also use it for file storage and backup.

I'd jump on the deal on the 30gig from Dell today! It's what a typical 15gig would normal cost, but you get 15gig free!
However, they have the 15gig on sale as well, so just pick whichever you can afford and order one today!
Here's the deal for the 15gig:
--New 15GB iPod: $319 Shipped- Today Only
Dell is offering the new 15GB iPod for $399. Order by 5/22 for an instant 10% discount to drop the price down to $359.10. TODAY only, use coupon code "91088152AF61" to save an additional $40 for a final price of $319.10. It's the lowest current price we've seen. Offer ends tonight at 11 PM CST.--
And the deal for the 30gig:
--409 Shipped- Today Only
Dell is offering the new 30GB iPod for $499. Order by 5/22 for an instant 10% discount to drop the price down to $449.10. TODAY only, take an additional $40 off with coupon code "91088152AF61" for a final price of $409.10. With Free ground shipping, it's the lowest current price we've seen. Offer ends tonight at 11 PM CST.--

The sweet spot is the middle model, 15 gig. I got a G2 20 gigger, because my music library is simply 14 gigs ... plus I now have a mobile hd! Get the largest one, if you can afford it.

Ahh, well in that case, I'd either wait if possible, or, if you have a local Best Buy, they're selling their leftover 20gigs for $299, which is an insane deal.

actually i find the new sensitive buttons quite pain in the ass. I think the old ipod is easier to play in my pocket. But i have no complain of the new 15 gb otherwise.

On paper the 10 GB may not look so great, but it depends on your needs. For me, the fact you can't easily use the iPod Dock with a case is a deal breaker. I'd rather have the cable. Additionally, I (only) have about 5 GB of MP3s/AACs and no real need for an external firewire drive. Plus the case that comes with the bigger capacity iPods isn't one I'd seriously use. I prefer one of the Marwares for serious protection and the iSkin for everyday use. So sure, the 15 GB is just $100 more, but not necessarily the best deal for everyone. Especially if you're short on cash!
If your music collection is rapidly expanding and you need the bigger drive or you truly value the Dock and Apple-branded carrying case, go for it. For some of us though, the 10 GB is perfect.

I'm getting the 10gb because I don't need the dock (Yet), I don't give a rats @s$ about the remote, and I don't have $400.
I might buy a dock later for audio out (for on my toolbox at work )

My own experience: Every computer/peripheral I've purchased with a HD in it, has been too small. When I purchased them, I thought they were more than big enough.
Always get the extra space. Assuming the ipod lasts, it will be full sooner than you think.

yeah, and about those $300 20gig ipods. i'm hunting for my first ipod for music and backup stuff. my ibook has a 10gig drive that's always almost full. considering an external firewire drive, that'd sure be cheaper, but i know i'd use the ipod every day. i haul my ibook around often as a jukebox.
what am i really sacrificing by going 2G instead of 3G? really don't care about the dock, the slightly smaller size. on-the-fly playlists, the full new software thing is cool, but is it really such a show-stopper?

Well if you don't care about any of the differences between the old and new iPods, I would say there's no need to go with the new models Aside from the extra disk space of course.

If I were hunting for my first and only iPod right now, there's no doubt I'd get the 2nd gen. 20gig for $299 at my local Best Buy. I actually prefer the looks of the 2nd gen. more, and you get more space than the middle-of-the-line 3rd gen. at a fraction of the cost. Plus, it doesn't have that "ticking" problem between tracks that many new iPods suffer from.

see... this is why this is tough decision. I have no idea what i'll do.. still, I'm not looking to buy till maybe the holiday season... so maybe some software bugs will be worked out, or maybe a new revision, who knows..... one thing i know, there is no mmoney in my wallet... and I still got a few more months of paying off my PB17.

Well, if I *could* hold off, I would. Those "clicks" between tracks will be fixed in the next iPod software update, so that'll become a non-issue soon enough.

Yeah, I don't think there is any way that they would leave the bugs as they are. The old iPods had some pretty crappy software updates (there was apparently a high-pitched noise in the early software, and that was corrected by one that made the menus very sluggish and hard to use...) But they have it down pretty well for 1.3, and I'm sure they'll do the same for 2.0.

Ditto with my 20 gig iPod. DV videos eat up space fast!

I bought a 15GB iPod because I just couldn't justify the extra $100 for the 30GB. It took me about 4 years to accumulate 5GB of MP3s so at that rate I still have 8 years before I fill mine up.
I debated between the 10 and 15 giggers, but decided the dock and remote, not to forget the extra 5GB, were worth the money. I didn't think I'd use the remote all that much, but since the touch sensitive buttons are impossible to use in a pocket, the remote is very handy.
So now two weeks after my purchase, I'm happy with my choice. (But I haven't actually gotten the visa bill, so we'll see. )
