Unfortunately, I don't think it's possible without a video card upgrade. Most likely your current video card is what is limiting your resolution choices, and it won't change unless you replace the card with something newer.

damn, 1024x768 on a 17" screen is a little too low for my liking.

Yeah, that is a low res. for a 17" screen...you can, however, find some good deals on used video cards that'll work in your machine on eBay or at www.otherworldcomputing.com under the Video Cards section.

That is very low. What kind of monitor is it? If it's an Apple Studio Display, I think I can do 1600x1200. If it's not an Apple monitor, it might not be able to do higher than 1024x768, no matter what video card you have in your system.

Sure is the monitor, not the Yosemite´s card, G3 Yosemite comes with the ATI Rage 128 with 16 MB, I can display e.g. 1920 X 1080 on my Apple Studio 17 CRT, well only at 60 Hz, I usually use 1280 X 1024, 75 Hz.
If you use Mac OS X open System Preferences -> Monitors and check if you have or not enabled the option to adjust the monitor resolutions.
Also you can try with SwitchRes (Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X version) from S. Madrau, that control panel enables several resolution modes that Mac OS simply ignore.
