Hi Everyone,

I have a problem and I wonder if anyone can help....

I want to be able to run an apache web server behind my airpot extreme base station, which in theory should be simple enough, but, I can't get port forwarding to work.

My set up is as follows.... PB12inch (running apache webserver) and PB17inch both behind the airport basestation and the PB12 inch has a ip addr of 10.0.1.2.

The network connects to the internet via a alcatel 530 DSL router/modem physically connected to the ethernet port of the basestation. I have set the basestation to forward any requests on port 80 to the ip address of the 12inchPB, but no joy !

I am not a networking guru my any means, so any help would be very welcome. I can't see what I am doing wrong

Thanks

What have you tried? Did you make changes in the airport admin utility? The thing about port mapping is that you have to manually assign an ip address to your powerbook. Look here:

Set up your powerbook with those settings.

In the admin utility, enable port 80 forwarding to the ip address you assigned to your powerbook. I use 10.0.1.201 because it's outside of the normally assigned range. HTH.

Two things: make sure you've got your ABS's ip address (10.0.1.1) as your DNS server otherwise it won't work. Also, you WILL NOT be able to check if it works from within your network. I have no idea why, but it won't work within the network.

Let's try to narrow down what your problem might be.

1. Is it a configuration issue?

Try accessing Apache on the PB12's IP from inside the network (from your PB17). Do this with an ethernet cable, not the airport. If you can't serve a page then the issue is with the PB12.

2. Is it an airport issue? Like above, but send the request to the base station IP. If you could connect in 1, but not 2 then you have an airport base station issue.

3. Is it a router issue? As above, but send the request to your router's IP as if from outside the network. If 1 and 2 worked, but 3 failed then you have a router issue. You probably need to configure the router to forward port 80 traffic to the base station.

You might have tried some combination of these already...
You are not your signature.

It's the last one. ABS's don't allow any incoming traffic by default. You've got to set up port mapping as described by my previous post.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys but I still can't get it to work, I can only deduce it's something to do with the modem and it's routing ability !

Thanks anyway !

Which provider are you with? Roadrunner, and some other cable companies have been blocking Port 80 because of some worms a year or so ago.

If that is the case you will need to asign a different port for apache to listen to (like 8080, the backup for port 80). And then you'll need to open that port up in the ABS.

Hello

I have the same problem as described.
I tried all this and it doesn't seem to work.

The only think that might help me is somewhere I read I shouldn't be using NAT, and somewhere I read to configure the routers TCP/ip settings manually instead of automatically.

I don't find how not to use nat, and i have a dynamic ip; so if I would configure my TCP/ip settings manually I would have a problem.

I tried in the network window of airport to decide myself what range of ip's I would give (which is dhcp only, and not dhcp/nat) it tells me that it's a wrong ip!

any ideas on what I have to do/do wrong/...?

Follow my instructions above to the letter and it'll work. Trust me. If it's not working, you're doing something wrong. (I've done this many times myself and i always have to refer to these directions because I can't remember them.)
