my iPod 5G 1st Gen does not recognize most of its drive since i updated to 1.3.

When connected to my Quicksilver DP 800 it locks up the whole machine.

I have now tried it with my 1st gen TiBook 500 and it has allowed me to install .4 G of songs but it will not allow access to the rest of the drive.

Is it safe to perform a low level format and will this allow me to regain full functionality of the iPod?

Does the iPod contain hiddem files that enable it to run that will be damaged by this drastic step?

Or is it in fact just a battery, a hard drive and a memory card connected to a scroll wheel and mini display that with the proper software installed (firmware?) becomes the iPod?

Has anyone else had problems like this?

Don't format the iPod with the disc utility or something like that -- use the iPod software updater to restore it.

Have tried that repeatedly to no avail.
Apple store employee suggested a trade in/replacement for $150, but i didn't even bother to ask what that would get me, as I felt it was ridiculous to pay anything if this was caused by a software incompatability on a device that is only 17 months old with extremely light usage.

You may wanna consider the PowerMax trade-in program towards a new iPod if that would be a way around it.

Can't say that I have. Mine works fine, and it's an original 5G model. Works fine on a 667 VGA, 800 DVI, and GHz 15" DVI.
