I had to do some resets so far with my 30 GB iPod.

This morning I wanted to switch it on while being in the dock, it was frozen.

I took it out, no response.

I did the reset (Hold button in-out and then the play & menu buttons for a few seconds) but it is in a kind of loop now. It wants to start up, you see the Apple logo and then it shuts down again, very annoying there is nothing to be done.

When plugging in the wall outlet (adapter) or Mac doesn't make any difference, neither to do it without having it plugged-in.

Of course(?) it doesn't mount on the desktop.

Any help is highly appreciated, as it will probably take a long time to drain the battery so it won't spin up the harddisk for a thousand times.

take it back to Apple. there have been some reports of hardware errors that were fixed with new units, so this isnt unheard-of. while there are many software bugs in the OS, none are quite this severe from what i've heard, so i think a whole new unit is probably your best bet

Yes it seems like a severe problem. I'm that far now that I can stop this weird starting-stopping by forcing it into Disk Mode (previous button and next button simultaneous) and it does mount on the desktop.

I did a reinstall of OS 2.0 and it's connected to iTunes now and uploading all the songs, but this still is in Disk Mode, since even after teh reinstall it doesn't want to turn on again, still the loop stuff...

Strange as the function as a hard disk seems to work, but the OS not, although it mounts.

Might be just a button (hardware) thing I guess.

I'll call Apple tomorrow: on Sunday here in Europe this multinational seems to be closed for help to it's customers

This morning I called Apple Care Europe (open on Mondays!) and first got a guy who probably never heard of the iPod and so was quite short: go to this site https://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/index.html and ask for a repair service.
So I did, and though I have my iPod almost an entire week! the site mentioned that the garantee was over, but if not I could state so and the they would reconsider...
I called again and this time got the good guy at Apple helpdesk.
He asked me to reset, check the hold button, etc. Very friendly and helpfull. They do not own one themselves, which is a pity: would expect to give your helpdesk employees an iPod, not that expensive and I guess it certainly would contribute to a better understanding. Of course some will then say they also would need to have all other Apple products...
After diagnosing the iPod he would make a repair report and it would get picked up by DHL and either repaired or replaced.

Well, at least I had the pleasure of playing and fiddling with it for almost a week .

While investigating my problem I found more people have (had) this problem, and the only solution is repair/replacement.

Well, I've had mine a bit longer than yours...maybe three-weeks but that iPod has been flaky. I consistently have three problems.

1) On three occasions I have my iPod either quit working when I was listening to it or have just found it with this specific screen on it. The screen depicts a disk icon with a magnifying glass over it.

To bring it back I've had to do various things...holding buttons to reset...plug into dock...push random buttons...etc. No one thing seems to bring it back.

2) Numerous times I've been listening to my iPod or had it docked only to discover it with the Apple on the screen. It is completely unresponsive and takes a reset to get it back to a functional state.

3) My play button will not respond from time to time. In order to get it to work...I just hit the menu button to back out and then it will begin working again. This has happened a few dozen times since I received my unit.

I understand this is a new product but it saddens me to think so many of the top-tier iPods seemingly arrive afflicted. Craziness...

I bought mine from Small Dog Electronics and am going to give them a call in the morning. I am just trolling the forums tonight to see what problems others are having.

Mine is working again! Draining the battery completely seemes to have given it the kick in the butt it needed?
Called Apple to cancel it, since they probably will just take a look and send it back, while I'm waiting couple of days without it.
Can call them when it happens again, of course.

So, did you let it just run until the battery was low and the iPod powered down and then continue turning it on and off until it wouldn't come on anymore or did you use some other trick to drain the battery?

Thanks,

I simply stood up from a night sleep, had breakfast and heard an unusual beep. It's amazing how many beeps you get used to nowadays actually!
I figured out it was the iPod, and since it was going to picked up, just let it.
Later on I tried one more time and found it to function everything just fine.
So I calle Apple and cancelled the repair.

When the iPod boots up, it does a quick check to see if anything is wrong, if it things something is, it does a disk scan, which is what the magnifying glass screen is. It takes some time, but eventually it gives you another screen with the result. I think next time it comes on you'd be best to let it go. If you cancel it, it is susposed to do it again next time it boots up. For more info click here.

Well, my iPod continues to lag and I received a service request from Apple for it. I have a few thoughts on the process.

1) The speed and efficiency of the process was top-notch. I shipped the iPod on a Tuesday afternoon back to Apple with a pre-paid shipping box they supplied me a few days earlier. I received the iPod back by noon on Friday of that week.

2) I am disappointed that Apple Tech reported there was no problem with my iPod. They simply returned it to completely empty. Though they didn't detail the diagnostics they ran...it appears as though they did only the things I had done previoulsy...none of which made any difference. The list includes, Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, iPod Reset, Erasing iPod and reinstalling software.

So, the lagging of the buttons persists and appears to have worsened as of late. The Apple Store I took it by thought there was something wrong but Apple Tech did not. I am at a loss but am going to be very pissed if this dies out of warranty and I'm left with a $500 paper-weight.
