for those who havnt seen it yet the june 2003 macformat got wind from a rumor site of the designs of the gen3 iPods and i quote
"yuck!is this the new iPod? we hope not: rumour site think secret reckons it's been leaked the blueprints for the latest model, but we - and many other iPod fans - hope they are wrong."
it goes on bout the gen3 iPod design and a drawin of it at the bottom which is very accurate includin the dock.
personally i like the new iPod design and would get one but i am very content with my gen 2 iPod
wat are your thoughts on this?

i hope that the june edition of macformat came out at the end of april, because if not then they are a bit late.
or i am missing the point of this post. are we talking about the new third gen ipods that *just* came out? if so, i really like the design. when i saw an mock up of them about a month before they came out i did not like them very much. then i got mine in the mail from apple and i have to sat that i prefer them to the 'old' ipods.

The first time I saw a concept of the new iPods, I was a little put off by the separate row of buttons above the scroll wheel. It seemed a step backward from the elegance and simplicity of the 1st and 2nd generation iPods' integrated control interface. Now that I've got a new 15 gigger, though, I have grown to like the new design. It took me a couple of days to get used to the sensitivity of the buttons, but I've got the hang of it now.

I felt the same way, but I guess they didn't have any choice if they wanted to go with all touch-sensitive buttons. The new ones are pretty attractive though. I like the fact that the are rounded all the way around, unlike the top of the old iPods, which had a sharp edge.

I love the touch-sensitive buttons. They took some getting used to, coming from an old-school, 5 GB iPod, but they rock.
The bug about the Play button not working 100% of the time w/o hitting another button first is there, but I imagine a SW fix will come soon. It's not a deal breaker.
As for the placement of the buttons, I'm still getting used to it. If I had to choose, I'd probably have wanted things left alone... But imagine it's just a matter of getting accustomed to the new setup.
I have a Marware case designed for the original iPods and that doesn't help either. When this new 3rd gen device is in a proper case, I imagine ease-of-use will increase some, too.

I agree. The new design is more a shock for someone used to the old model than anyone else: touch-sensitive buttons feel *very* sensitive when your fingers are used to actually pressing something. The hardest thing to learn is not "dragging" your thumb across the center button while spinning the wheel.
But after two weeks the new model feels very natural. I think I can even get through long lists faster spinning the softtouch wheel than the mechanical one.
The button placement is still within easy reach for the thumb to do everything. It's still an efficient, elegant interface. The iPod designers knew what they were doing.

I have to admit, I didn't really care for the new ipod design at first (and, still prefer the 2nd generation design over the new one) but you can't argue with a significant weight and size reduction with the 3rd generation. Plus the backlit buttons are nice.
I am curious what the next protective case will look like. I currently have the "isee" (hard clear plastic with belt clip and headphone case) for the 2nd generation 10gig and all that shows through the hard plastic is the touch-wheel and buttons surrounding the touch-wheel. It's great because barely anything is exposed.
The case for the new ipod will most likely have to have either small circles to accomodate the new button layout or maybe they could develop some see-through material that your "touch" could pass through but would still cover and protect the bottoms across the front. I'm anxious to see what comes out!!
