I primarily use a mac, but once in awhile use windows, will I be able to mount the ipod on windows w/o 3rd party software?

You can use the iPod as a FireWire drive on both Mac and Windows - it acts as a conventional FireWire hard drive.

However, for adding music, a Mac formatted iPod is not interoperable with MusicMatch under Windows

And vice versa -if an iPod is originally initialized for a Windows machine, its file system changes (to FAT32, I think?) and it is not interoperable with iTunes on the Mac.

XPlay lets Windows talk to Mac formatted iPods. It's only $29.95.

You could also add the music to the FireWire hard drive, then add it to the library back on its respective machine.

Personally, although I have two Windows machines, they don't get their grubby little mitts on my beautiful iPod!

Only my Macs get to touch it. I simply transfer stuff over the network from the PCs.

if you initialize the new iPod for windows os, it can play on both windows and mac.
if you initialize it for play on mac, it can only be used on macs.
thnx

aren't the new ipods farking sweet?? I currently have a touch-wheel 10gig and couldn't stop drooling when I picked up the new 10gig at the apple store the other day.

I'm curious how water-resistant both the new and the old ipods are. I'm always quick to shield it from even the lightest rain but, I'd love to take it running with me if I thought it could take it.

cheers,
brian

i'm sure the old or new ones would be fine in a pocket, unless it's really pouring rain. looking at the new ones, though, i've wondered if there was a way to make a waterproof case for them. since they're all touch, there could be a thin layer of plastic over the front that would still allow you to use the buttons. all of the ports could be covered except for the headphone jack, and with special headphones that had some kind of rubber ring around the plug maybe you could seal that too. you would need waterproof headphones, too, though. there are shower CD players that are waterproof, though, so maybe this will be possible soon. It would be great to swim with the iPod...

of course, this is all hypothetical. i don't have any experience that tells me this would work, nor the nerve to try anything of the sort on my own (when dell finally ships it, that is)

i'm thinking one of these guys' cases would work:

http://www.aquapac.net/

i have one for my palm that lets me use it through the case. only thing i'm wondering about is the headphone cord...

but get an iTrip and a case big enough for the two together, and tune the boat's radio to the iTrip... and it's music on the lake!
