1) Is there a list somewhere, of supported drives in OS X? Its time for me to upgrade my 8X burner to a 48-54X model, but I wanna make sure its going to be as seemless as the OEM one was.
2) What is the different between a 48X CDR and a 24X? Isn't a CDR just a solid piece of material, does its speed rating really mean anything? I've never seen anything above a 48X rated CDR, so what happens if I buy a 54X drive and burn at 54X?

This isn't really a list, but you can check if a drive is compatible at the drive compatibility list.

Somehow they are different. I think the speed rating is somehow stored on the disc itself. Nero can detect the manufacturer, and I'd assume the speed rating is also stored on the disc in a similar fashion.
If you buy a 52x burner (I thought 52 was the highest they went, maybe it's 54), you might be able to burn at 52x to 48x media. This isn't a big deal anyway, since the difference between burning at 48x and 52/54x is very small. If you're burning audio CDs, you'll wouldn't want to burn that fast anyway.
Also, the drive won't record at it's highest speed until it hits the outside of the disc anyway. So you have to burn an entire CD to get the burner to hit it's max speed for the last 1/3 of the burn or so.
