My to my dismay, it looks like I might have to give up the cable modem that I have enjoyed for the past two years, as I need the extra money to pay for day care expenses. My eMac doesn't have a built in modem (it's an EDU model) so I am wondering if USB modems work with Mac OS X. If so, any suggestions?

Yes. Check out Zoom 56K USB Fax/Modem, part # 2986-00-017. There are Windows & Mac versions, that's why I added the part number for the Mac version.

No drivers are needed. I added it to my Sis' iMac and it just worked.

It's around $95. I got mine from www.sparco.com. It's got a 10 year warranty.
