Hi,
I have a 17" flatscreen CRT that I bought with my 450 G4 back in 1997. Today, the screen started to do strange things, like it would start to shrink within the viewable screen, and I got some horizontal lines breifly.
The monitor is used daily and occasionally the resolution and color depth is changed. It seems toonly do this when it is "cold", meaning it was asleep or off before.
This is very intermittent now, but it looks like something is either loose or going bad. Does anyone have any experience with such a thing and can tell me what may be happening? Is it likely repairable or is it time to buy a new monitor?
Thanks for your input,

Moniters do go bad over time. Maybe it's time to upgrade to that 23" HD display... 8-)

It's a gamble, but you could spring for a new cable. I've had a LaCie 22blue for a few years, and some time ago it started doing funny things with the color: going WAY warm (like 2000k?). It would also jump a little occasionally. I bought a nice new cable and it's been fine for at least 8 months now. Completely solved the problem.

Well, actually I think its from 1998. I think its the Trinitron, with the three little bars that are always present across it.
Anyway, I started my computer up after a few hours and the screen acted up, and flicked black completely. I turned the power off and the back on, and the monitor worked fine after that (so far). Actually, there was one big "pop" and now everything seems fine...
By the way, there are lovely ticks and pops emanating from it - I am pretty sure I have a hardware problem. So, my question is this - if it is something like a capacitor going, is that a repairable option or should I just buy a new monitor?
My old CRT has the Apple casing, which I am partial to, but hey, I need to see what I'm typing!
I am also a student who is trying to spring for a 12" PowerBook, so money is tight. The least expensive solution is what I need, and commentary is appreciated!
Of course, I could also buy a nicer monitor and phase my old G4 out and replace it with my laptop, but can I get high resolution if I plug a monitor into the laptop?
Thanks,

It's from late 1999 or 2000.
If it's dying, it's dying.
I've had one Trinitron fail, and it died exactly how you are describing yours.
Just replace it.

A CRT's best useage is during the first 3 years. You should plan on replacing it after that time. Particularly if your reliant on it for accurate color and sharp images. We've tried to salvage all signs of life from our Radius 20" display - we've had it for over 8 years - it's hardly useable.
You should hear it turn on.... Vawomp!
Yikes!
