I've started to notice that on my 2nd gen. 10gig iPod that I can fully charge it, let it sit unused for 3 days, and upon hitting a button it'll tell me the battery is gone, 0%, done, over.
However, my new 3rd gen. 15gig iPod, I charged it to full, let it sit 9 days without use, only to power it up and see 3 out of 4 bars still lit up.
Is something up with my 2nd gen. 10gig iPod? It's not supposed to lose it's charge that fast is it? It's just been in my home, around 75 degrees F, not anyplace cold. Is there anyplace I can d/load iPod Software 1.2.6 again to overwrite 1.3?
Thanks!

well, according to your other topic about who (besides you, Ass.) has received their Dell iPods, you stated that you received your iPod on the 21st of May. Today is the 28th of May. By my count, that's 8 days, including the day you got it. Now, how you had time to charge it AND let it sit for 9 days in the 8 days you've had it is beyond me. Even if you'd gotten it 2 weeks ago, i find it hard to believe that you would go 9 days without touching it.
That said, the iPods have to be "running" all the time so that they can turn on instantly when you press a button. This uses up battery power. As does the clock, but to a lesser degree. In the manual for the new iPod it says that the battery will drain on its own with disuse. Nothing i'd be overly worried about.

Doh! That was a typo...going so fast I meant to hit 8, and yes I mean 8. I haven't used my new iPod except tonight to turn it on to see how many bars were left in the power meter.
But still, how can a clock eat up a full charge in 3 days on my older model iPod? I mean the Hold Switch was on the entire time too...any other experiences?
EDIT: By the way, yep, I haven't even loaded a single song onto my new iPod. It's not getting TOUCHED until a new case comes out that I like for it...I'm terribly protective over the chrome backing and it won't touch a palm without a case on it first.

I've got a 20GB, and it's never lasted more than three or four days without going dead!

Hmm...I guess it's good to hear I'm not the only one. What iPod software version are you using? I stumbled across 1.2.6 still up for d/load at some German site, so I may try putting that version back on instead of 1.3 since I don't use AAC.

I don't blame you about being protective. I got my 10gb yesterday, it scratches worse than my iBook!!!

Gen1 and Gen2 iPods have never been the same since firmware 1.2.1
for some reason the clock introduced with that version seemed to ruin the battery's standby time.
All new models (Gen2) that came after 1.2.1 seemed to work fine with the version pre-installed, but the earlier versions never seemed to be able to handle it.
Since the Gen3s came out i sent mine back in frustration and am having it replaced.

I'm using 1.3, but I've had the problem since day one. I bought the iPod last August.

The battery drain could be caused by the alarm. Make sure it's off.

I've only had mine for 6 days (2nd gen 10GB), but it's held a charge very well. I fully charged it after a got it, and then used it for a few days (about 7-8 hours of playing time and used the backlight quite a bit)). Then I recharged it fully and have been using it for the last couple days (4-5 hours of playing time) and it still has about half a charge. Really haven't noticed it drain much, if any, while it's asleep.

Well the alarm's off, and it wouldn't have even came from the Hold switch being on, cause I've had that set to "Off". It's a bit irritating, but I guess there's not much I can do...ah well

My old 5GB had this problem - I don't know whether it was a software problem or just normal battery wear. I would tend to think it's software related because I didn't really use my iPod that much at the time, so it didn't go through any extraordinary amount of recharge cycles or anything like that.
But yeah, it would be down to 2 bars after a week or sitting with the hold switch on, and dead within 2 weeks.
My new 3rd gen iPod is holding its charge very nicely so far... we'll see how it goes.
