Well it's my first major disapointment with my 15Gb iPod (beside the click at the begining of each songs). My earphones are busted. The left bud clicks and distorts like hell. I never even once cranked the volume more than half. Is it a manufacturing default or it's just crappy earphones? Too bad, I tought they did a decent job.

My last set of iPod earphones (on my original iPod) had a very hard life and I never had any trouble. I think you were just unlucky, I would consider taking them back to Apple and see what they have to say.

Yeah, take them back. The set that came with my 15 GB iPod sound great. You got a bum pair.

That's what I was planning to do. It just happened 2 days before my 3 weeks vacation in Paris. I'll have to take care of it when I get back.

You could also pick up some cheap in-ear phones from Sennheiser, the MX500s (or 400s, they just don't have volume control on the cord). I got mine through NewEgg.com for $16 shipped and they sound much better than the stock earphones IMO.

I second what everyone else has said, just sounds like you got a bum pair from apple.

I've had my 10gig ipod for a month now with no problems in the headphone department . . . I'm even impressed at the sound quality, not bad for their size . . . although they can be quite uncomfortable if worn any longer than about 30 minutes or so.

good luck with apple replacing them for you.

cheers,
brian

Well I spoke too soon. Today I fired up the iPod when I got on the train and the left earphone sounded like crap, distortion and crackling everywhere. Looks like I'll be taking a trip down to Apple now.

I wouldn't even bother. Get your replacement pair and hock them to someone who doesn't have the iPod but likes "those cool iPod earbuds." Then go out and buy a better pair of portable headphones like the Sennheiser PX series or the Koss Portapros. Your ears will thank you!

I plan to use my iPod (7-10 days, Apple says) with Grado SR-60 headphones. Check out all you've ever wanted to know about headphones at www.headphone.com, or the headroom forum at www.head-fi.org.

I have the same headphones, the Grado SR-60 is the MAX for the money ( Stereophile Class C, What Hi-Fi 5 stars ), you can't get anything better but they aint pretty or really comfortable The standard in-ear headphones are not that bad and most cheap sennheisers will not sound any better, some of sennheisers latest headphones sound like crap, too bad Grado doesn't make any in-ear headphones. Don't buy a more expensive Grado the SR-60 and the SR-80 are a steal and the more expensive models really need a special headphone amp for maximum results. Oh and don't connect your headphones to the remote connect them directly to your iPod...

Does anyone else instantly clock iPod earphones? Hard to believe such a small thing can be instantly recognised, but without even seeing the remote I can pick iPod users out of the crowd

Actually I've seen quite a few people with what I *thought* were ipod earphones until I got a closer look. There are actually a fair number of white earphones out there (even before the iPod came out).

they're called "nude" phones, more popular in other countries, you can import plenty though.
