I'm looking to get a fairly cheap scanner ($79.99) like tomorrow or the next day. I want it so I can scan my artwork in for Photoshop work. So I was wondering everyone thoughts on this one I found:

Canon LiDE 30 Flatbed USB scanner.

I've compared it to an HP and Epson in the same price range. The others have pretty much the same features. (They have transparency scanning and this one does; big whoop for me.) This one has a bit higher resolution than the HP, I think, and the best warranty of the three I compared. So what does everyone think? GTood experience with Canon products? I've never owned a Canon product. And I've had nothing bud bad experiences with every piece of Epson equipment I've owned or used. Thanks for the help, guys.

fad I have an aging Canon 650nu or something along the lines of that.

It looks very similar to that, I think the max rez mine can do is 2400 or something, its a little fuzzy to me. but it is 42 bit color, that?s what made is stand out from the other 100 dollar scanners. Plus it is 1 inch thin

As for quality, i never had a single problem with it, except for the fact that i don't think they came out with OS X drivers, so I have to use the OS 9 software in classic mode, it works fine but still a little bit of a hassle.

As for Canon as a company have had my S330 digi cam just over a year now and never once had a single problem with it, it has always been loyal, even after 2.1 gigs of pics taken, so that?s roughly about 2100 pics so i would def get another Canon product.

Let us know what you snag.

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!

Check into Epson scanners. I think the Epson 1260 is available for about $40-$50 and it's a pretty decent scanner with drivers for OS X.

The Canon is excellent but there's one drawback - it's slow (it uses a different type of scanning mechanism in order to make it so compact). Apart from that, or if you don't do a high volume of scanning, I'd buy it.

My Epson 1200U has served me very well.

I've got an Lide 30 about a couple of months, it rocks. Take one as long as you can, I think the Lide 50 is its successor (which has USB 2.0; useless on a Mac).

Pros:
* slim
* no power adapter nec. (but it seems to like its own USB cord only)
* good scanning.

Couns:
* somewhat slow
* limited software/drivers, but works well under Adobe Elements, Photoshop
* does not scan "3d" objects well (poor mans digicam), but who cares.

It matches my iBook perfectly. I put both always in a small back-bag when traveling.

Hmm, does the Epson have the same scanning method? By slow, how slow do you mean? How long would you say for the average paper scan? And this Canon has OS X drivers (so the sys requirements say). Thanks a ton for the feedback, guys!

How slow are we talkin' -- that's my only real concern.

Mindfad

I'm waiting for the delivery of my Canon Lide 30. I could have bought one of the more expensive models if I wanted a faster scanner (everything I've read about this scanner is that it is slow, but otherwise a good scanner) I have an Epson 1200 that I paid $200 about 3 years ago and then bought the transparency adapter) and now its useless plastic no thanks to Epson not releasing any drivers for OS X (at least one that isn't a beta) and its the last Epson scanner I buy!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to my Lide 30 and I have Canon's G3 camera, excellent camera, even bought Mom a S400 for Mothers Day. Good Stuff, never had a problem with anything Canon.

I just bought this scanner the other day and have been very pleased with it (especially for the very reasonable price). I like the fact that it doesn't require a power adapter and it is slim enough to take with you if you needed to do some scanning on the go (might be a tad noisy to use in a library unless you had a private room or something, though). If you are just doing grayscale documents it's pretty fast (I haven't done much comparing with other scanners, but maybe 15-20 seconds for a page, although I suppose this depends on the DPI you use). Full color, full page scans do seem a tad slow, but not that bad.

The software seems reasonably good -- I scan directly into photoshop.

Well, that does it. I'm going for it. Thanks a bunch, guys! I'll order it now.

Mindfad,

My iBook broke down this week, let's see if I can install the software on my old iMac 233...

I would say from memory close to a minute for a full page 200 DPI full color...

Hang on a minute... installing now...

Close to a minute for full-color 200 DPI? That's no big deal for me at all. Actually, I don't think that's long at all. Very cool. Thanks again.

And I just completed the order. Got it from BestBuy.com (booo, hissss, I know!), but they had free shipping, so meh. It should be here in a few days. Whoo! A new peripheral for my Mac! (This doesn't happen often at all!)

And here are the results of the dutch scan-contest:

0075 dpi: 017 and 027 seconds
0100 dpi: 034 and 047 seconds
0150 dpi: 034 and 047 seconds
0200 dpi: 060 and 098 seconds
0300 dpi: 060 and 098 seconds
0400 dpi: 440 and 595 seconds
0600 dpi: are you kidding?
1200 dpi: see above...

Times are when scanner starts to return (to start position) & when picture shown in Adobe Elements.
Scan settings (lide 30 & Elements 2.0): Full A4, Color (Photos), Descreen off, Unsharp Mask On (these are the standard settings).
Except for the 400 dpi scan, there was no excessive hard-disk access...

Mindfad, when installing, drivers, esp. Elements, be prepared for your worst installing experiences so far...
It can be done within 10 minutes, or something between 1,5 hours and nothing at all. Please install the software with your account you will use it for, with "can manage computer on". Installing thru a different account will result in deep sh.t. And you cannot overwrite files with another manager account. Adobe... unbelievable...

Hmm. I'll watch out for them drivers. I have PS7. It just adds drivers for Photoshop so the images appear in PS? Is there like a separate application included on the Canon disc for just scanning images and exporting them however you wish?

As for the seconds, that's not bad at all. I won't be doing anything much larger than 150-300 DPI, and if I need larger, I can live with losing a few minutes of my life to a scanner. Overall, I'm very pleased, and I haven't even gotten it yet.

Thanks again!

Hmm 2. The installer scatters some files thru your whole system... Some into users/shared, into cmprefs, lib_cfmsupport whatever that all is, and one file to be placed under additional modules, extensions (dirnames may differ, I have unfortunately a german version) of Elements or PS.

Yes, you can do an import from... Scangear CS in PS, which after the scan puts the picture in PS.

You will love this scanner.

I should read more accurate...

The old Canon software I have (1.02) has some additional programs, I never looked at btw, for Classic (only)...

My guess is you will never (want to) use it...

When scanning at 600dpi and higher (heck, even at 300dpi sometimes), scanning full pages saturates the USB bus, so the scanning mechanism speed becomes less important.

tooki <- swearing at his UMAX that is a great scanner, but doesn't have native OS X support! Grrrr!

Go with the Canon. It runs in OSX fine and is integrated into PhotoShop. I have an Canon 650 NU that performs well with latest Canon Drivers. I'm sure the newer flatbeds are a step above. Canon stuff seems more integrated to me. The software bundled is usually a cut above too. My Canon G2 Came bundled with Photoshop LE. I use PS 7.0 now but I thought it was thoughtful of them. They seem to be working pretty close with Apple lately. By the way, you can download ScanVue, I nice scanning utility that is compatible with Canon.
And it's being consitantly upgraded and built
for OSX. Put it on your dock.

Been pretty happy with my 1240u, only qualms I have have already been mentioned and addressed. Seems achingly slow, but the big pay off is that I bring it to the library with my powerbook and scan all the pages and images I need right there without have to check anything out. Very slick!

I have the same scanner, excellent quality and good scans for a $80 scanner!

The drivers on CD were very old, so I would go to the canon site and get the latest, they work great in photoshop, and it imports directly in so no need to use any additional applications/steps

here are the drivers (install 1st): http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCpr...vel2catq=macdr
(Install 2nd): http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCpr...vel2catq=macdr

I haven't used the front buttons so I have no Idea how well those work

I had a UMAX 6500 Firewire scanner before this and the scans are much slower but even when I scan 6 or 7 times in a row the speed is not a problem (most scans at 300 or 600dpi)

I wish umax would make OS X drivers, because Vuescan is a hassle and is expensive

I tried a LIDE 30 for about a week. It was too slow for my tastes. I went with the Epson 1660 photo.

Quite a few guys at xlr8yourmac really like the canon though. If you don't mind waiting they've said it's a nice little scanner for light duty.

good luck

Something I don't think anyone has mentioned, but the Lide 30 is very loud and slow. If this doesn't bother you though, the scans look fine...

Yes, I was a little surprised at the noise -- you probably couldn't use it in a library unless you had a private room.

Epson makes great scanners and the software also works great in Photoshop and OSX.

I'd go with the Epson, you will NEVER use the highest rez for scanning anyway.

Hmm, would anayone happen to have the driver file for Photoshop by itself that they can upload for me? Photoshop said to reinstall it; something's fudged. The installer doesn't seem to work Panther—for the scangear stuff—and I wanted to try it out.

Thanks if anyone has it, or has any idea why the installer won't launch.

I had the Lide 30 which I used for scanning with my laptop away from home... very loud and slow. I ended up selling/giving it to my brother for his 12" PB and kept on using my Epson 2450... which was a dream until the 3200 came out.
Yose.

if you have an old scanner, check and see if the $70 program Viewscan supports it

i have a new Canon LIDE 30, i never got any of their drivers to install right, so i just got viewscan, worked like a charm, and to me, this scanner IS FAST.
