Does anyone get this?? Today, my iPod has been charging all day. And whenever the system starts up again, iTunes automatically opens and the iPod starts re-uploading about 100 songs... I have 10gb of music... Later on, it'll somehow drop down to 8gb and have to 'update' and put the remainder back on... What's going on??? This happens periodically. Not every time. I always eject the disk (iPod) before unplugging it and or booting into OS9 etc...

Does anyone see this happening?

I don't know why the iPod is caught in this cycle, but you do know that you can at least turn off auto-updating? It's a setting in iTunes, click on the iPod icon at the bottom right of the iTunes window. Then you'll have to manually update the iPod whenever you want it to.

But have you had this happen to you before?? It's just weird and only now have I posted about it. It's like a handful of songs get's deleted for some reason and the mac has to put the songs back on it...

Are you a constant tinkerer? If you update tag info or add cover artwork or make any change whatsoever to a track, it will re-update upon next iPod connection.

Then again, that wouldn't explain your total HD space in-use going from 10 GB, down to 8 GB and back again. Nevermind, maybe...

Indeed weird.

No, it just happens. I know I update tags and such but in this case, it was just charging.

Hmm what else did I do.. I booted into OS 9, and back again.. But that shouldn't do anything. And I always remember to eject the iPod disk so....

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone...

My iPod doesnt arrive for another couple of days so I am just guessing. Perhaps you have some smart play lists that are updating on the ipod as the playlist content changes........does it do this even when it has been set not to auto sync with your mac?

Even with a smart playlist though,it shouldn't have to re-upload entire songs back on the iPod right (without any changes). It's as if songs were erased from the iPod magically...

I posted about this a while back - one day I just lost about 512 songs. Actually here's my old post:

Alright so I just docked my iPod. I'd had to move some files to work, so I threw them on there, dumped them off at work, tried to do some printing ( I HATE FONTS!! AHHHH!!), and then came home. Well iTunes popped up and said it was updating the iPod, copying 1 of 512 songs! What?? I hadnt changed anything, but apparently I had lost over 500 songs off of my iPod mysteriously. And they were whole albums I'd lost, not just random songs. I'm thinking twice about keeping my music on my iPod with only a DVD-R backup. How do you lose that much!!?? At a couple Megs a song (192 AAC), thats a big chunck to lose. I never hit Yes when iTunes pops up on a different computer, and I never unplug the iPod before its been unmounted. So I dont see how I would lose songs. One thing I did notice, is I restarted (through the apple menu) a computer at work while my iPod was connected and it never stopped flashing 'Do not Disconnect'. When you restart your computer, should it not unmount the iPod and allow you to disconnect it?

And to make other things strange... iSync fails syncronization every time (starting yesterday before I lost the sons). Anyone ever seen that one and know how to fix it, or what's going on?

UPDATE: Went for a jog tonight, no problems, only stopped playing once in a 40 minute run, seems alright to me, and that was when I was doing sprints, so I'm happy.

But I just put it in the cradle and the Disk Scan Icon appeared!! I've had this thing less than a week and according to this KB article, "If iPod finds an issue when it is turned on, it automatically uses internal diagnostics to check for and repair any damage to the hard disk." Wow, this might explain my previous two problems, but I'm worried that this thing, it lost songs and wont sync and now this - I think its going in to service no matter what the outcome of the disk scan.
So you're not alone...Things behaved properly after that and havent had any more serious problems, and I live in Canada so it makes service a hasle....so I've just kept on using it.

I still dont know why I lost all those songs though.

The good news is that iSync now works after updating to v1.1 and the ToDoLists now transfer to the iPod. YAY!!

Glad to hear that I'm not alone. I'm just bringing it up because it's weird. It hasn't really caused any problems at all. I mean, the computer just re-uploads these songs (thank goodness it's firewire!). I just noticed it one day when I was in a hurry. I mean, when you're in a hurry, even firewire seems slow.

I had to get a file off the iPods drive.. and then, of course, iTunes opens up and starts updating. I'm thinking, this will be fast then boom... over a hundred songs needs to be updated. I had to wait a whole minute probably.. no biggie but just noticed it and had a minute to think about how I did nothing to cause this...
