I'm having the same problem. I can't seem to find a way to re-name my memory sticks. I have one 32MB Sony and one 128MB Lexar. I'm working on it though... I'll post something here if I find out how to do it.

I was able to label the memory stick that I use in my Clie using the Clie software, but not with OS X (the label shows up in OS X once you do it, though).

Same problem with mine. You can label it under WinXP just fine if you have access to a machine.

I format my CF cards all the time with my Mac. I find it's a lot faster and easier if they're already in the CF reader than putting them into the camera and navigating it's menus. Plus, I can label them this way. If for some reason the format went wrong when using the Mac, you could always reformat, or just format it in the camera again.

good idea about just formatting the memory stick on the camera if anything goes wrong.

i tried it out on my 16mb card, that i would not cry if i lost.
disk utility > click on the actual memory stick (not the partition) > it said it was dos filesystem > then i erased the partition with msdos filesystem.

after that it worked fine. put it into my camera and the card works fine. took some photos, put it back in the usb reader, imported them into iphoto. worked perfectly.

did the same for my 128mb one.

ooh, where did you get that icon?

[edit] I googled this:
http://www.webgraph.com/icons/

it looks similar - but yours looks smoother.

i honestly have *no* idea where the icon came from. it was there the fist time i plugged in my digital camera. i just got info and copied the icon and then pasted it onto some blank document, then iconographered it off the document.

Same problem, sort of. My Fuji digital camera comes up unlabeled. I asked awhile back whether there was a workaround and no-one had a clue. OS X won't let me change the name in the usual ways. Any ideas?
