I've moved to a new apartment and gotten a new G4.
Somewhere in there my monitor has started a gentle flicker. It is brought about most severly by turning the dishwasher or the microwave on, but it is much slighter when they aren't running. My office is in the basement and the kitchen is above, but its never bothered it before.
What is this caused by and how do I nix it. The new G4 is running one monitor from the DVI to VGA adapter provided by apple.
Thanks
Neil

It's a CRT monitor, electromagnetic interference can screw it up (try putting a fluorescent bulb next to the screen, or a magnet, this is your microwave and dishwasher).
It also sounds like there is some sort of electrical wiring fault in your apartment, perhaps some grounding issue (but I don't know electronics very well).

So I was wondering if this was coming through the cord and an APC or special surge protector would solve it, or it was some sort of interferance that was magnetic or waveform that I couldn't really do anyhthing about.

Get a decent AC filter. I use a Panamax on my stereo/HT and on my office machines.

Where would I buy something like that, and how much should I pay?

Before you buy something, move the computer. The cause is most likely environmental- meaning the source is not coming through the powercord. The most likely culprit is a florecent light- either overhead or in a desklamp. Try turning out the lights and see if it still happens. Next on my list of culprits (although may be #1 considering the dishwasher and microwave) is poorly shielded wiring in the wall. So move the comupter to the center fo the room. If that doesn't do it, move it to another floor and see if it fixes it.
You may go out and get yourself a line conditioner, which are not cheap (several mid-range UPSs include these, if you have to go this route, that's what I'd do) and have it do no good. Try the other stuff before spending money.

Paco is bitter about the loss of his .mac webpage. Image will return when his sadness lessens.
