I bought a Yamaha 12x8x32x CD-RW (model CRX1600L) drive about two years ago this fall. It uses a firewire connection to my iBook.
What I want to do is replace the drive inside of that case with a newer one, since CD-R speeds have increased dramatically since then, and I'd like to get a drive with some buffer underrun protection.
So if I just swap out the drives, and the new one is compatible with OS X, then should this plan work?
Thanks for the feedback.

I did the same thing with a Sony 12x cd-rw firewire drive, swapped out the original drive and dropped in a new 32x Sony and it works great with Toast and Disc Burner in X.

Glad to hear it worked out for you....do you think it makes a difference what brand the new drive is?

yup sure does, Apple is slow as hell to offically update drivers for the newest drives.
I did the exact same thing you did, i had an old LaCie 12X4X32 that i got about 3 years ago (400 bucks) and last fall i put in a new Sony 40X12X48 burner, the new drive wasn't supported by the finder or iTunes (still offically isn't) but over at
Xlr8yourmac.com
they people have written their own drivers for OS X, all you have to do is boot up in OS 9 and swap out a small file deep in the system and it works like a charm
The only thing is each OS update it changes the driver back to the original so i have to boot back in 9 and change it back every update

I just replaced the drive in my QPS 16x burner with a Buslink 12x I had in my (yuck) PC. The drive is actually a Lite-On and Toast and iTunes saw it fine. Now that I got my 1 Ghz eMac the sucker is going on eBay.
Changing it will work as long as the drivers are available if needed.

One thing to keep in mind is the depth of the mechanism -- the front-to-back measurement. I tried to put a TDK drive in a Yamaha enclosure and it wouldn't fit because the TDK was a little deeper than the original Yamaha.

I found that the case from the Yamaha 1600 didn't work with other drives when I tried. Maybe its FireWire bridge firmware checks for a Yamaha drive?
That said, the Yamaha CRX-F1 (I think that's the model number... I know it's "F1") is one fine drive... the FireWire version is also super-spiffy-looking!
