Hi,

I just had my remote on the iPod die and I called Apple for the warranty service. They are asking $45 (Canadian - that's $25 US) for shipping and handling to send me a new remote. And that's for in warranty service. I can't imagine how much they would ask for out of warranty service. Does anyone else think that's way to excessive for *shipping and handling* for a remote?

What iPod has it and how long you had it. If it is under warrantee they should not charge you ANYTHING!

The iPod is four months old and well in warranty. I doubt they will go with the prepaid envelope. Well I had other Apple stuff fixed during the warranty period. I'd always take it in Apple accredited repair centre here and pick it up once it's done. The thing with the iPod is that it has to be done directly with Apple and that involves shipping. I am not going to go broke over $25 but I still think they shouldn't charge that much (a new remote probably costs them less). I have had hard drives die on me and I paid for the shipping to the company and they paid shipping to me after they fixed the disk. That seems pretty normal. Apple....

I've heard of other people getting remotes replaced for free. Is it possible they think you broke it yourself or something?

Nope - I just used it. The iPod works OK. It was working at first and then it became a bit screwy and now it's not working at all...

It's possible that this is a charge that will only be levied against you if you don't return the bad one -- I had to replace my iBook power adaptor under warranty and they asked for my credit card number, with the understanding that if I didn't return the bad adaptor within 10 days I'd be billed for the replacement.

You should call Apple back up and verify why they want to charge for you warranty service, since that much money is inexcusable. If the person you talk to insists, go up the chain of command.

$45 for shipping and handling is ridiculous. I would call Apple again or return the broken remote to the store where you bought it.

Cheers,

Sander.
Have a nice day!
