I'm not sure if this is a network or peripherals question, but I'm gonna just ask it here.

I have Adelphia Powerlink Cable modem service here in VT.
I currently get charged $5 a month for modem rental, but Adelphia does allow you to provide your own modem, and has a list on their site of compatable modems.
http://adelphia.com/high_speed_internet/modems.cfm

My question is, are there any difference between cable modems? My cable modem service is not that fast (the MAX, and rare max I've seen is 500K downloads. Usually it's more like 125-250 (in Chimera)

So... Like 56K modems, are all cable modems more or less the same? Most of the modems listed on the compat web page are going for pretty cheap on eBay....
Thanks in advance...

AFAIK, it shouldn't make a difference. It mostly depends on your ISP and the amount of bandwidth being used by others in your area.

For the most part they are all the same. Some allow USB besides ethernet connections. Others also offer more diagnostics so that it's easier to tell what the problem may be when you lose your connection.

I actually have a Motorola SB4200 that I got to keep from Optimum online after I moved. I can sell it too for a reasonable price. It was brand new when I got it and it was used for about 6 months.

Send me a private message about it, I'm interested, (but also already have a bid in on a SB4220 on eBay) What's the difference?
I have a SB4100 now.

I would recommend NOT getting a modem with a built-in router. This just adds another layer of complexity which is unnecessary.
