Voila! Amidst discussion of Palm acquiring Handspring, a new model of the highly acclaimed Treo has been annnounced.

Exciting design features include:

A great everyday mobile phone—designed with the smaller, narrower look and feel of a mobile phone

Fast Palm OS 5 organizer running on an ARM processor

Fully-integrated QWERTY keyboard—optimized for this amazingly compact device—makes dialing the phone or typing email and messages easier than ever

New web browser that allows you to surf any web site—including JavaScript enabled sites—and even download software

Built-in digital camera so you can take and send pictures in an instant or connect a face to a phone number with picture caller ID

Built-in SD/MMC expansion slot for adding memory, content or hardware (supports SD I/O)

Five-way navigation for optimal one-handed use

Improved battery life for longer talk time and standby time

Bright color display that provides great readability both indoors and out

Service Providers (US providers):
AT&T Wireless
Cingular Wireless
Microcell (FIDO)
Nextel
Rogers AT&T
Sprint
T-Mobile
Verizon Other

These new Treo 600 smartphones will be priced at a premium compared to our current Treo line, and are expected to begin shipping late this fall. At that time, we plan to offer a special upgrade program for existing Treo owners.

My hunch is that by the time the Treo 600 ships, iSync 2.0 will provide over-the-air (OTA) synchronization. So instead of syncing via Bluetooth, you'll simply use your unlimited wireless data plan to sync via the wireless network. That way you'll be able to sync your Treo 600, PowerMac, and .Mac account whenever and wherever you want.

Of course, without Bluetooth, you won't be able to use the Treo as a BT modem for your PowerBook. That's why BT missing is still a sore point.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Brighthand article.

This is the first Treo I don't hate. Too bad there's no BlueTooth syncing. Makes it a lot less attractive for Mac users.

for people that really REALLY want blue tooth, at east they added the SD expansion slot, so you could always put in the Palm BLuetooth card (for about $125)

If that had 320x320 and Bluetooth I would have put it on pre-order.

Gosh, I'm already tired of phones with cameras in them.

I didn't want a calculator in my phone in the 70's, and I don't want a crummy camera in my phone now!

Still waiting for the perfect smartphone....

Of course there are no drivers for the Palm Bluetooth Card for Palm OS 5, so that's not an option. See here...

... So, from the press release, the new Treo still doesn't seem to be a UMTS (aka W-CDMA, or 3G) cellular phone...? That isn't so clear - but, certainly, a future Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Treo Palm OS 5+ device would be a Very Good Thing indeed!

BTW, the "classic" Treo (180/270/300) also looks quite good, IMHO: I'm not so sure the new one looks all that better - a little too "shining high-tech", maybe; anyway, it's good enough, certainly...

It is aimed at a US market who don't even have GSM half usable right now so they aren't even thinking about G3.

I HATED the old Treo's as they were big clunkey and cheap looking. This one looks incredible.

The bluetooth thing is laim though.

Low resolution? No problem.
No Bluetooth? Hopefully a third party solution.

I will get one!

... OK: didn't know about the US situation...

Here, BTW, is a pic of the NEC e808Y UMTS (+ GSM) "videophone" offered by 3 in Italy (and also elsewhere in Europe, of course): it would be cool to have a new Palm/Handspring Treo with those "advanced" multimedia capabilities and the Palm OS organizer built-in - that would be a killer device, at least in Europe...

P.S.: The Treo 600 also looks much better than the NEC from the design point of view...
