Hi guys-

I have been using the last iteration of the Airport, the model prior to the Airport Extreme. I have it set up for my G3 Powerbook and use it's modem to connect via dial-up to AOL from both the G3 powerbook and a G4 desktop. My Macs are running OS 10.2.4 and 10.2.5 on the Powerbook.

I've finally ordered DSL and I expect to recieve the modem in a week. This will be my first time setting up DSL, so I have no idea what it's like. I'm fairly technically adept, but I'm curious what to expect for set up. I was thinking I should set the DSL modem up on the desktop machine first to get it working. Then later hook it up to the Airport Basestation. Or is it a simple enough to set-up the DSL modem to the AirPort Basestation, then connect basestation to the G4 desktop via ethernet?

On the software side of set up, I guess I set the basestation to be accessing via TCP/IP? And I'll be setting it up to access via the new DSL provider, SBC Yahoo, not AOL.

Thanks! Nelson

It's easy to over-think this. Physically connecting it, you may want to try going to a Mac first to test the connection, but it really doesn't matter one way or the other: it's the difference of plugging one ethernet cable into the ABS or the Mac.
S/w-wise, you'll need to know if your connection requires PPPoE or not. If it does, you'll need to enter your user name and password in the appropriate fields on either the ABS or the Mac. For this reason, I'd recommend going directly to the ABS set-up and skipping the testing step (so you don't have to config settings on the Mac twice).
If you do not connnect via PPPoE, it's really plug and play. The ABS will auto grab an IP when it can and start distributing IP's to connected machines. The Mac should be set to using DHCP in the Network pref pane under the Airportt tab. This will allow it to get one of the ABS' IP's.
It would be a good idea to ulplug the ABS for a minute while setting up the DSL modem. This will completely reset it.
If you have any more questions/problems, check the Networking forum. It's chock-full of this sort of stuff.
