The old boom box that's been hooked up playing radio for my phone system music-on-hold has finally given up the ghost.

The idea, and I think it's a good one, (of course--I had it!) is to make a custom playlist of kind-of mellow but cool songs of my choice, alternating every song with a quick 5 sec. "Thank you for calling, we'll return to the phone as quickly as possible, blah blah..." messages, which I can record using Logic.

I found a used 5 gig iPod at PowerMax for $175.00 and ordered it, but then I started thinking.

This should presumably come with an AC power adaptor, right? Is it harmful to the battery to power an iPod off of the AC adaptor continuously? I know with the rechargables for my digital camera, the mfgr. warns against leaving them on the charger for more than 24 hrs, and I ruined a battery this way. Hopefully, this is not a prob. with an iPod.

Also, can you put a playlist on repeat on an iPod, or does it just stop when it gets to the end?

Tempting. BUT-- we've got a lot of repeat customers that call all the time, and I think they'd get mighty sick of the same twelve songs after a while, and I don't want to have to mess with burning CDs every week. I'm thinking 3 or 4 hundred songs on the iPod, and I can forget about it for a long while.

Besides, I want a 10 gig, anyway.

Spend a little more on it and get a MP3 capable discman or CD player and just leave it on repeat. Since the only people listening are on a phone, audio quality is not too important. I don't have any hard numbers, but if you encoded all the songs at a bit rate of 64k or less... I bet you could fit a TON of songs on one MP3 CD.....

yup, reformulating my statement, with CIA's observations:

get a MP3-capable discman for USD 50 and keep the ipod to yourself.

Yeah- there's a big gap between "CD quality" and "phone quality". Either the discman, or if you have a server with an audio out, drop them all into iTunes, plug in, go.

MP3 Cd's utterly and completely slipped my mind.

Now, I just need an excuse as to why it would be too bothersome to return the iPod...

Silly me.
