(Posted this in the DV/Audio forums and have gotten no response. Thought I'd try here.)

Hi.

I'm watching the prices drop on the Pioneer A05/superdrive, and I'm wondering:

1) I have an Eye TV, which records in MPEG-1. Is there any way I could get these into something like iDVD (or some other software) to make DVDs of the video I have captured?

2) Is there any way to make a VCD on a DVD? That is, can I exploit the space on a DVD to make longer, higher-quality movies using my Eye TV?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

The answer is "yes" to both questions, but you have some obstructions.

1. As you probably know, getting the MPEGs from EyeTV into iDVD/iMovie is no simple process. The MPEG must be demuxed, then rejoined, yadda yadda yadda...

The resulting file can then be edited in iMovie and used in iDVD.

2. VCD (even MPEG1 files without VCD formatting) on DVD is possible in theory, but not a lot of DVD players support it.

Check out www.dvdrhelp.com for the best source of information in MPEG, VCD, and DVD. You can even check to see which formats your DVD player support.

Woot!

Yeah, I'm aware of the pain that is demuxing and recombining. The upshot, though, is that exporting it to something like a high-quality DV doesn't lose that much quality, and so I'm hopeful that it could work out OK.

Thanks for the heads up on the compatibility problems. I'm used to that with older DVD players and VCD, but I didn't know that there could be issues with a VCD on a DVD.

Looks like I have some decisions to make soon: continue upgrading my G4/533 (more ram, a superdrive, and a video card) or just drop down the cash for the low-end G5.

Hmmmm.
