OK when i first got on Mediaone I had a netgear modem, a real old school one that sucked and needed to be rebooted all the time. Then I bought myself a 3com which was great at first, but it looses its connection more and more now, and I have to power cycle it too. The 3com is docsys compliant, the netgear was waaaaay NOT. So this is getting real annoying, are there any cable modems that can simply reconnect when they fall off, automatically. That way my whole network doesn't go down at 9 AM and stay down till I get home from work? What good is a reliable server if it gets booted off the internet!

I just got a Motorola Surfboard SBC4220 for $40 of ebay, works like a champ (DOCIS-whatever comp too). Replaced my 4100.

Look on your providers site for a list of compat modems and dig around ebay. you should be able to find a good deal and a reliable modem.

Also, perhaps it's not the modem, but the cable companies wireing?

Yeah if you were having issues with a DOCSIS modem, then more likely, it's the cable coming into the modem. Sounds like there is too much signal loss on the line, or too much noise.

Get them to come out and do a line test on the cable line going to the modem. It shouldn't be under -5db, and idealy will be over 0db, but not over around 10db.
